Mission Summary

An Associate Software Engineer is responsible for accurately reviewing the quality of Motional’s Autonomous Vehicle (AV) performance data using manual analysis and by building automated engineering solutions. This Software Engineering role forms a bridge between the Operations and Engineering teams to help improve the quality of Triage outcomes for data driven decision making. Individuals in this role will partner closely with the Triage Specialists, Autonomy and Operational Integration Leads to maintain higher standards of the data quality by deploying scalable automation solutions. They will get a unique opportunity to understand Motional’s Operations, Triage Performance Analysis processes and Engineering Infrastructure to execute on their essential duties as listed below.

What you will be doing:

  • Design and build to requirements performance analysis automation tooling using software engineering best practices
  • Design and build to requirements performance analysis debug tools, including but not limited to visualization interfaces
  • Learn Triage data review processes to perform essential data Quality Assurance and Quality (QA-QC) functions manually and via automation as applicable
  • Partner with Triage Specialists and Performance Analysis Engineers to co-develop automation tooling specifications
  • Provide engineering infrastructure requirements to the partner teams for expediting software development
  • Document automation tooling project timelines, verification and validation test plans and customer adoption roadmap; owning the entire horizontal from software specifications to solutions delivery
  • Gather performance analysis automation KPIs, quality improvement metrics and share in an articulated format with the Engineering and Operations leadership team

  • Other duties as assigned by the management chain

What we're looking for:

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Engineering - such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, Robotics or related field
  • Academic experience or equivalent with software engineering concepts (OOP), including requirements analysis, source control, CI-CD build processes and design reviews
  • Academic experience or equivalent in all stages of the design process: from early strategy and ideation, wireframes and prototypes, to the final implementation of UI design
  • Entry level experience with Linux, scripting and analytical languages (E.g: Bash/Shell, Python, SQL), preferably backed by an academic capstone project or internship
  • Entry level experience with web development frameworks (HTML, CSS, React), AWS services (Lambdas, S3, SQS, EC2) and database management
  • Familiarity with issue tracking and configuration management tools such as Atlassian Confluence, Jira and version control tools such as Bitbucket, Gitlab
  • Strong inclination to troubleshoot, debug problems with supporting verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Have strong attention to detail and ability to analyze data for long periods of time without sacrificing efficiency and accuracy
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, ability to think logically and remove bias from evaluation
  • Prior academic or internship experience of process automation and statistical optimization techniques

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience working with safety critical and complex systems such as -- Robotics, Autonomous Vehicles, Automotive, Medical Devices or Aerospace Technologies
  • Experience in developing process metrics for measuring the throughput, capacity of operational tasks and for recommending corrective actions
  • Experience in Quality Control and Quality Assurance (E.g: Test Plan and Case Management)
  • Strong focus on Safety and Systems Engineering practices

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and at times for long periods; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. This position is not restricted to any one site. You will be responsible for domestic traveling as per the requirements of the business (less than 1 week per quarter).

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors including but not limited to specific skills, experience and expertise, role location, certifications, licenses, and business needs. The estimated compensation range listed in this job posting reflects base salary only. This role may include additional forms of compensation such as a bonus or company equity.
