We are looking to hire Software Development Engineers to join our team. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable a multitude of applications across various industries. 

Are you passionate about Database Technology and Cloud Computing and fascinated by challenges such as managing millions of databases across a wide price/performance spectrumThe Azure SQL DB Resource Governance (RG) team is responsible for ensuring a high-quality experience for customers that provision databases that are allocated slices of a single core all the way up to an entire machineThis wide range in potential resources provisioned (performance) translates to potential revenue that spans pennies to thousands of dollars per dayCompounding this landscape is the variety of SQL DB offerings which include Serverless (aka pay-for-use). In the Serverless offering we eliminate the need for users to accurately the max size of the SQL container. They specify a theoretical maximum and we scale their resources up and down depending on workload’s demands and charge them for exactly what they use. Our NorthStar is to make Serverless the default and only mainstream offering.

Required Qualifications: 

  • 8+ years of programming experience in C/C++/C#/Java/Python. 
  • 5+ years of experience related to Performance Engineering skills covering design/development/usage of performance workloads/Tools to measure, analyze and root cause performance and scalability issues in the product. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or Mathematics or Physics. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Extensive and specialized knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Database/OS internals, Hardware knowledge (CPU/System/Networking/Storage), and Cloud related technologies. 
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills. 
  • Great curiosity and willingness to question, undaunted by hard technical problems. 
  • 2+ years of experience designing and developing production quality software using C/C++. 
  • Proven experience in improving product performance. 
  • Experience in both Windows and Linux system performance tools. 
  • MS in CS/CSE/EE or related discipline.

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:   
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer with a passion for technology and for helping customers succeed on our platform by building the next generation high performance database products for cloud and on-prem that will delight our customers. You have an opportunity to work on these technologies (Azure SQL Database, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines) with a focus on driving product performance, scalability, and reducing TCO. You will have the opportunity to work on scale-up performance of SQL on a single system (1000+ cores, 24TB+ ram, 100 Gbit NIC ...), scale-out performance (SQL big-data clusters with 100+ nodes) and optimization of SQL for Cloud. The optimizations will also aim to fully leverage capabilities in upcoming technologies (new technologies for cloud native databases, new processor architectures, storage, networking, memory, PCI interface etc.) in order to deliver better performance and reduce TCO.
