The Microsoft Premonition team develops state-of-the-art AI platforms to improve the world’s biosecurity and bio-intelligence capabilities (https://www.microsoft.com/premonition). Microsoft Premonition is winner of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Award (2021). Our end-to-end systems provide detection of unexpected or emerging pathogens using cloud-scale AI, real-time monitoring of dangerous or invasive species with AI-powered “Biological Weather Stations”, and prediction of where biological threats could emerge by fusing geospatial, climactic, and biological data. Join our highly cross-disciplinary team, born from deep research roots, to help us launch critical technologies at the intersection of biology, AI, and autonomous systems.

 

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can accelerate our efforts to deliver novel cloud platforms in the emerging AI-guided biosecurity space. An ideal candidate is highly collaborative, comfortable working on complex problems, and passionate about delivering solutions in real-world settings. Core competencies include cloud service development, scalability engineering, and web API design. Familiarity with the Azure platform, experience with distributed systems, cloud-based machine-learning workloads, and security best practices are highly desirable. Applicants should be able to demonstrate expertise developing in C# and Python, and familiarity with the TypeSpec language is desirable.

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C# and Python, PowerShell or Bash
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years experience building distributed, scalable cloud infrastructure.
  • Understanding of software engineering and security best practices.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or preferred qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience building cloud services in Azure
  • Experience on customer-facing Web API design
  • Familiarity with cloud-based machine-learning workloads and toolchains
  • Familiarity with the TypeSpec language and Azure ARM
  • Good communication and documentation skills

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
