A Day in the Life

The Neuroscience Group develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.
The Cranial Laser Ablation group is focused on developing products to improve patient outcomes and setting new standards of care using advances in MRI, computer-assisted surgery and laser ablation technology.
As an experienced engineer, you will guide and mentor other engineers, participate in technical reviews, select the most promising concepts, implement advances in current state-of-the-art software and testing technology, and identify opportunities for productivity and quality improvement.
As a Principle Software Engineer in Test within the Cranial Laser Ablation Research and Development organization you will have responsibility and authority to develop and perform test automation verification & validation activities for software and systems to ensure Medtronic’s cutting-edge medical products meet our user’s needs and our quality and reliability standards.  This position requires application of technical expertise to independently determine and develop approaches to solve complex technical problems with ingenuity and creativity.  Work is performed under limited direction.

A Day in the Life 

• The Prin. Software Engineer in Test is responsible for leading and contributing to the development of test automation for cutting edge products used in the medical field.  Specific tasks include: 

• Responsible for architecture, design and building the frameworks to test and deploy complex systems.

• Will develop and evaluate test automation scripts, implementing analytical tools in JavaScript and Cypress.io

• Interfacing and collaborating with systems, software, and test engineering team members.

• Serve as technical voice for current and future-state testing practices with internal and external stakeholders

• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other software and test engineers.

• Create project specific test strategies and approaches.

• Designing, developing, testing, maintaining, and documenting/validating software testing components and applications.

• Conduct code reviews using Bitbucket pull requests

• Support test execution and debugging of scripts during the test cycle

• Contribute to test automation process improvements

• Participate in all phases of product development as needed such as reviewing requirements, design, usability, risk assessment, and testing execution.

• Contributes to the completion of work group objectives through building relationships and consensus to reach agreements on assignments.  

• Identify and implement process improvements.

• Participate in defect tracking and analysis.

• Effectively communicate findings, problems and solutions to project teams and stakeholders.

• Collaborate and maintain excellent working relationships with team members and stakeholders.

• May manage projects requiring delegation of work and review of work products.

• All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.

• All other duties as assigned.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

• Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science or Engineering and

• Min 7+ years of relevant experience or an advanced degree and 5+ years of relevant experience.

Nice to have

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED  

• Proficient in JavaScript and web testing (frontend and/or backend).

• Working knowledge of software design, development, debug and test practices.

• Oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to work in a team environment.

• Proven leadership skills and mentoring capabilities

• Experience with test automation including GUI, integration, reliability and designing and implementing test automation frameworks.

• Software development or testing experience in the medical industry or other regulated industry.

• Able to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities.

• Strong knowledge of modern, iterative software design processes and development practices including agile and test-driven development.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with business and technical audiences.

• Unix/Linux experience

• Python and/or C++ experience

• Experience in one or more of the following: Cypress, Mocha, Chai, React testing experience, Rabbit MQ

• Experience developing and/or testing GUI applications and Medical Devices

• Project management skills including planning, estimation, and requirements management.

• Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

• Understanding of FDA Quality System Regulations (QSR).

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$140,800.00 - $211,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
