A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Partner with New Product/ Technology Development to use Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)/ Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) methodologies to proactively develop robust, compliant new products aligned with requirements traceable to the Voice of the Customer, using predictive engineering and anticipating and managing potential issues.
- Use a solid understanding of quality and reliability requirements to influence the selection of a compelling, superior concept that meets those requirements. Work with Design Assurance organizations within various business units to resolve quality or reliability concerns with assigned products.
- Flow down prioritized requirements (critical parameters) to the hybrid and components, both qualitatively (critical parameter flow down) and quantitatively (tolerance allocation) and aligning with suppliers and manufacturing. This includes the use of FMEA, FTA and other risk assessment tools to adequately address risk.
- Use predictive engineering and optimization methods to ensure the components, hybrid and product are robust to processing and use conditions and are predicted to meet or exceed quality and reliability expectations. This includes working with product, component, design and process engineers to identify and perform the correct reliability stress tests and interpret the data for reliability predictions.
- Establish verification and control methods so that the new product is capable of fulfilling functional and reliability requirements under normal and accelerated use conditions, and is manufacturable with high, predictable yield without rework and with high reliability.
- Generate and ensure that documentation supporting product release is complete, compliant and meets requirements.
- Develops, coordinates and conducts technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and design of experiments (DOE) constructs.
- Recommends design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability.
- Completes risk analysis studies of new design and processes.
- Compiles and analyzes performance reports and process control statistics; investigates and analyzes relevant variables potentially affecting product and processes.
- Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards.
- Analyzes preliminary plans and develops reliability engineering programs to achieve company, customer and governmental agency reliability objectives.
- May develop mathematical models to identify units, batches or processes posing excessive failure risks.
- As necessary, proposes changes in design or formulation to improve system and/or process reliability.
- May determine units and/or batches requiring environmental testing, and specifies minimum number of samples to obtain statistically valid data.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
- Requires mastery of a specialty area and full knowledge of industry practices, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
- May have broad knowledge of project management.
Nice to Have
- CRE Certification
- Design for Six Sigma Black Belt desired; equivalent experience will be considered, if certification is lacking.
- Strong understanding of concepts in electronics design, test, and manufacturing (functional safety, design-for-test, defect-based test, IDDq, burn-in, high-temperature operating life, etc.).
- Strong track record of successfully managing quality and reliability tasks from start to finish resulting in reliable and manufacturable designs.
- Computer skills with Microsoft applications.
- Strong statistical analysis skills. Reliability data analysis and modeling with experience in Minitab, Weibull++ or other reliability modeling software. Experience with Bayesian system modeling desired.
- Good technical writing skills. Good overall communication skills. Good presentation skills and experience using presentation tools and applications.
- Must be team-oriented and able to lead quality sub-projects and initiate own assignments.
- Must be able to define general approaches and develop solutions to complex problems using imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions consistent with organization objectives.
- Must be capable of multiplexing tasks efficiently and effectively to schedule.
