As a Principal Hardware Engineer in our Embedded Systems Environments team, you will develop or enhance custom test systems, capabilities, and methods that enable the test and verification of an embedded system.Careers That Change Lives
In this exciting role as Principal Hardware Engineer, you will develop, enhance, and maintain custom test systems that monitor and control an implantable medical device embedded system to enable hardware and firmware verification. As part of a research and development organization, you will use hardware and software skills during test system lifecycle phases: architecture, design, implementation, verification, validation, and support. You will learn about medical devices and work with medical device hardware and firmware teams to determine needed testability and to identify and resolve problems.

A Day in the Life
As a Principal Hardware Engineer in our Embedded Systems Environments team, you will develop or enhance custom test systems, capabilities, and methods that enable the test and verification of an embedded system. A day in the life includes: seeking inputs from embedded system ASIC designers and firmware developers to understand test requirements, test conditions, and new functionality required; using hardware skills to identify off-the-shelf components and design and facilitate the build of custom printed circuit boards and test fixtures; using software skills to control the test system and enable test automation; collaborate with your engineering partners to solve problems and debug issues; develop tests and execute test method validations; and, identify opportunities to increase productivity and effectiveness of the test environment.
Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Design and implement custom test system software - from high level interfaces to subsystem interfaces to controlling test system equipment.
- Design and implement custom test system hardware on printed circuit boards.
- Integrate custom hardware and software with off-the-shelf equipment.
- Define test system requirements by collaborating with medical device embedded system ASIC designers and firmware development teams.
- Create and execute test system verification and validation tests. Document validation actions and results.
- Update test system hardware and software for new medical device functionality.
- Learn about medical device functionality and read medical device hardware and firmware code.
- Influence medical device ASIC hardware designs to enhance testability of device firmware.
- Evaluate firmware verification test failures, identify root-cause, and determine corrective action.
- Be the test system point of contact for new product hardware and firmware teams. Plan test system work to meet product schedules. Create test system releases to support product changes. Help test teams understand test system capabilities.
- Provide guidance to technicians and less experienced engineers.
Must Have (Minimum Requirements)

- Requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with minimum 7 years of experience OR advance degree with minimum of 4 years of experience
- Hardware skills to read schematics and understand digital and analog circuit functionality, debug problems, design and implement changes, and occasionally design and implement new functionality.
- Lab skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, and other lab equipment.
- C/C++ programming skills to understand existing software, debug problems, design and implement changes, and occasionally design and implement new functionality.
- Knowledge and experience with embedded systems.
- Strong debug and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others to achieve common objectives.
Nice to Have (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience in circuit design and simulation.
- Experience using JTAG to control and test hardware.
- Experience in scripting like Perl, Python, CMake, and Makefiles.
- Familiar with Linux operating system.
- Familiar with telemetry or Bluetooth.
- Experience with FPGA programming.
- Familiar with or interested in learning RTL, hardware emulation, and RTL acceleration.
