A Day in the Life

You would be joining our Product Development Organization as an Engineering Manager for the Development Engineer group. Development Engineering group is responsible for the Verification Strategy, Requirement Decomposition, and Specification Development for our surgical robotic projects in development. To us, Verification is not just the last step on the path to commercialization. You will be responsible for partnering with Systems Engineering, Marketing, the design teams, Quality and Project Management to drive meaningful processes to lead an effective and efficient engineering team.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineering Manager to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a strong technical background, capable of managing an engineering team, delivering high-quality products, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. As an Engineering Manager, you will play a critical role in driving technical excellence and ensuring successful project execution.

In this role, you will join a world class team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers responsible for further development and enhancement of the globally launched Robotic Assisted Surgery platform within the Surgical Operating unit.

Working on the Medtronic Campus in Boston, MA, you are responsible for leading and managing the development engineers in support of the surgical robotics platform, including:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, providing guidance, coaching, and support to ensure professional growth and success.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, driving engagement, morale, and retention.
  • Provide performance feedback through regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and development plans.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team, ensuring that projects are on track and aligned with company goals.
  • Manage project priorities and resources within the team to meet deadlines and milestones.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Operations) to improve working relationships
  • Identify and mitigate risks and roadblocks for the team, ensuring smooth execution throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Continuously assess and improve processes, methodologies, and tools to enhance team efficiency, productivity, quality, and culture.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging the team to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define resource needs and hire engineering talent as required.
  • Manage team capacity and allocate resources efficiently to maximize productivity.
  • Assist in budgeting and cost management for the team
  • Use interpersonal skills to effectively resolve conflicts through active listening, empathy, and open communication
  • Facilitate mutually agreeable solutions between individuals or teams

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the company's design and development of new medical device products or software systems.
  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.
  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.
  • Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
  • Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Required Knowledge and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of engineering experience

OR

  • An advanced degree in engineering or another technical field with 3+ years of engineering experience

Nice to Have

  • 7+ years of engineering experience with a minimum of 5 years of experience with direct medical device development
  • Experience with applying or developing a product according to System Engineering principles
  • A strong understanding of Regulatory requirements for Design Controls and Design Verification
  • Industry-experience with statistical analysis of data
  • Experience with robotics or electro-mechanical systems
  • Proven track record of contributing to medical devices of high complexity
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills
  • Experience with managing people or projects
  • Degree in Robotics Engineering or related field

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$136,000.00 - $204,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
