Role
The Senior Software Engineer (Backend) will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining highly scalable, secure, and resilient backend services and APIs. This role requires strong software engineering fundamentals, hands-on coding expertise, and experience building distributed systems in a cloud-native environment.

Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend applications and microservices.
Build secure and high-performing RESTful APIs and backend services.
Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews to ensure engineering excellence.
Work closely with product managers, architects, and other engineering teams to deliver business-critical solutions.
Develop software using modern development practices including CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps principles.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues while improving system reliability and performance.
Optimize application performance, scalability, and resource utilization.
Contribute to system design decisions involving distributed systems, messaging platforms, caching, and databases.
Ensure solutions meet Mastercard's security, compliance, and operational standards.
Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, estimation, and retrospectives.
Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices across the engineering team.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives and adoption of emerging technologies.
All About You
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
Strong experience in backend software development using Java.
Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles and software engineering best practices.
Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
Experience building scalable, highly available, and distributed systems.
Experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and related backend technologies.
Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MySQL.
Experience working with source control systems such as Git/bitbuket.
Experience working in Agile software development environments.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or similar tools.
Knowledge of security best practices, authentication, authorization, and secure API development.
Experience with observability tools including Splunk, Dynatrace.
Experience working in high-volume transaction processing or payment systems.
