Job Summary

Summary:
Responsible for analyzing system specifications to develop software for computer applications; developing solution software; documenting the methods and procedures used in software development; and testing, correcting, and revising software.

Essential Functions:
Analyzes users’ needs; designs, tests, and develops software to meet those needs.
-Analyzes proposed applications for equipment requirements and capabilities.
-Analyzes, reviews, and revises software to increase operating efficiency or to adapt to new procedures.
-Writes routine to complex software code and debugs software.
-Prepares detailed analyses, plans, diagrams, and verification procedures for existing and proposed applications.
-Prepares and executes software test plans.


 

Qualifications

Reporting to the Senior Scientist/Principal Investigator, the Programmer will develop/design models for predicting treatment outcomes, conduct analyses, and verify that models perform as intended. He/she is expected to communicate technical details and problems to researchers who are not programmers in an efficient manner and collaborate with the research staff on projects. Creative thinking and an ability to analyze various options quickly and make decisions on technologies/algorithms is expected. 

  • Develop/design and upgrade models for guiding clinical decision making with treatment resistant mood/psychotic disorders and catatonia.
  • Conduct analyses, and verify that models perform as intended
  • Expected to communicate technical details and problems to non-programming staff in an efficient manner and collaborate with the research staff on projects
  • Document software structure using flowcharts (updating existing flowcharts if applicable)
  • Document variable definitions (using codebooks)
  • Document all code changes by heavily commenting code, explaining programming decisions
  • Maintain source repository (e.g. SVN) for all software releases and inputs
  • Ensure that new software features (e.g., new input tables or output tables, calibration procedures, or model components) are functioning as intended, by standard debugging techniques (e.g., unit testing, automated production of graphics and tables)
  • Optimize runtime on Windows and Linux (shared cluster) platforms
  • Assist with training research assistants on running models and being available for troubleshooting unintended outputs
  • Assist with implementing standardized procedures for archiving software and associated files for reproducibility of published results

Bachelor's Degree Computer Science required

Related programming experience 2-3 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to program in languages such as C++, Java (J2EE), XML, Python etc.
- Experience in developing web applications using at least one popular web framework (JSF, Wicket, GWT, Spring MVC).
- Excellent knowledge with relational databases, SQL and ORM technologies.
- Detail-oriented and excellent concentration ability.
- An analytical mindset and critical thinking.
- Demonstrable ability to discover and fix errors in code.
