Lead Engineer – Switchgear Product Engineering & PLM Data Transformation
Role Summary
Key Responsibilities
1. Switchgear Product Engineering
- Understand switchgear product architecture, components, assemblies and manufacturing requirements.
- Review existing switchgear products and identify engineering gaps, inconsistencies and opportunities for standardization.
- Provide engineering judgment on part design, interfaces, mounting arrangements and assembly structures.
- Review whether drawings contain sufficient information for manufacturing by a qualified supplier.
- Support resolution of complex engineering and design issues.
2. CAD & Drawing Engineering
- Lead the technical review of Autodesk Inventor CAD models and engineering drawings.
- Establish and enforce consistent CAD modeling practices.
- Review dimensions, GD&T, materials, finishes, tolerances and manufacturing definitions.
- Identify incorrect, incomplete or duplicate engineering data.
- Define rules for modeling, drafting and engineering documentation.
- Guide the execution team on complex CAD and drawing issues.
3. Product Architecture & Modularization
- Develop hierarchical product structures covering:
- Product → Assembly → Subassembly → Part
- Identify common and variant-specific components.
- Develop reusable product building blocks for different switchgear configurations.
- Rationalize existing assemblies to reduce duplication.
- Define engineering structures that can support future product configurator requirements.
- Review component interfaces and compatibility across product variants.
4. Engineering Standardization
- Develop and implement common engineering standards for:
- CAD modeling
- Drawing creation
- GD&T
- Dimensioning
- Material specification
- Surface finish
- Naming and numbering
- Revision control
- Standard components
- Fasteners
- Ensure the standards are practical and can be adopted by the customer’s engineering organization.
5. BOM & Engineering Data
- Review and restructure Engineering BOMs.
- Establish correct relationships between parts, drawings, assemblies and product structures.
- Identify duplicate, obsolete or incorrectly defined components.
- Standardize engineering part numbers and naming conventions.
- Ensure engineering data is complete and consistent across the product.
6. Fastener & Standard Component Management
- Review existing fastener usage and definitions.
- Establish standard fastener libraries and usage rules.
- Ensure standard and custom fasteners are properly defined within the engineering environment.
- Support standardization of commonly used mechanical components.
7. PLM Readiness
- Work with the customer’s PLM team to understand the required Windchill data structure and metadata.
- Ensure engineering data is cleansed and structured before migration.
- Review:
- Part and document metadata
- Revision/version information
- CAD relationships
- BOM structures
- Naming and numbering
- Required attributes
- Product hierarchy
- Ensure the engineering dataset is suitable for controlled PLM migration.
8. Team Leadership
- Lead a team of approximately 3–5 engineers/designers.
- Allocate work based on technical complexity and engineer capability.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring.
- Review critical engineering outputs before customer submission.
- Establish quality gates for the execution team.
- Monitor progress, quality and delivery against project milestones.
- Escalate technical risks and delivery issues early.
9. Customer Interaction
- Act as the primary technical interface with the customer’s engineering team.
- Participate in technical discussions and design reviews.
- Clarify engineering requirements.
- Present findings, recommendations and proposed solutions.
- Drive resolution of technical issues without depending on the customer for every engineering decision.
- Build confidence with customer engineering stakeholders.
Required Technical Experience
Essential
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical/product engineering.
- Strong experience with switchgear, electrical equipment, industrial products or closely related engineered products.
- Strong understanding of product assemblies and mechanical component design.
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor or a comparable 3D CAD system.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, materials and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with Engineering BOM / EBOM structures.
- Experience in product standardization and engineering data management.
- Experience leading engineering teams or technical projects.
- Ability to independently make engineering decisions.
