Department: Internships

Electrical Engineering Intern - Spring 2027
Location: Suffield, CT
Employment Type: Full-time Internship (Spring 2027)
Compensation: Paid

About LiquidPiston
LiquidPiston, Inc. is a fast-growing engine technology company developing a new generation of compact, high-performance propulsion systems. Our patented rotary X-Engine and High Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC) are designed to deliver greater power density, efficiency, and fuel flexibility than traditional piston engines.
Our technology is being developed for demanding applications including UAVs and drones, defense, aerospace, portable power, and hybrid-electric systems. At LiquidPiston, engineers have the opportunity to work directly on real hardware and see their work move from the lab to a running engine.
Internship Overview
LiquidPiston is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineering Intern to join our Controls & Electronics team for Spring 2027. This is a hands-on opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers on the electrical and control systems that power our next-generation engines.
You’ll gain practical experience across embedded firmware, electronics, sensors, controls, and hardware testing while contributing to active engineering and development programs. Rather than simply observing or supporting from the sidelines, you’ll have the opportunity to troubleshoot real engineering problems, work with test hardware, analyze data, and contribute to solutions that are tested on actual engine systems.
This internship is ideal for an engineering student who enjoys hands-on problem solving and wants exposure to the full development process - from circuit and firmware development through hardware integration, testing, troubleshooting, and iteration.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design, prototyping, and testing of analog and digital circuits, signal-conditioning boards, and power electronics.
  • Perform hands-on electrical testing and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, power supplies, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Assist with schematic capture, PCB layout, and hardware prototyping using tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Assist with the development, testing, and debugging of embedded firmware in C for TI C2000 microcontrollers.
  • Support the integration and testing of sensors including pressure, temperature, speed, voltage, and current sensors.
  • Work with actuators and communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, I2C, and RS-232.
  • Support bench testing and data analysis of engine control systems and closed-loop PID controls.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues and work with engineers to identify and implement solutions.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, controls, and test engineers during system integration and validation.
  • Document test results, circuit designs, troubleshooting activities, and technical findings.
  • Participate in an iterative engineering environment where designs are tested, improved, and tested again.
Required Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital circuits and fundamental electrical engineering principles.
  • Solid programming experience in C or C++.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and function generators.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work hands-on with hardware and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Ability to work onsite five days per week.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience with TI C2000 or other microcontroller/DSP platforms.
  • Experience with embedded systems or firmware development.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD, or KiCad.
  • Knowledge of power electronics, motor control, or battery management systems.
  • Experience working with CAN bus or other communication protocols.
  • Experience with sensors, actuators, data acquisition, or engine/vehicle control systems.
  • Familiarity with PID control or other closed-loop control methods.
  • Prior internship, research, or academic project experience involving embedded systems, controls, electronics, automotive, aerospace, or propulsion technology.
Our Culture
At LiquidPiston, we challenge convention and solve hard problems. We move fast, think boldly, and iterate quickly. Our team thrives on collaboration, creativity, and resilience. We take calculated risks and believe that every setback is a steppingstone toward breakthrough innovation.
Equal Opportunity Employer
LiquidPiston, Inc. is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or veteran status, and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.
All offers of employment at LiquidPiston are contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background check, drug screening and credit check.
