Job Description

The Office of Laboratory Protocol and Special Events is seeking an undergraduate student to use artificial intelligence and other digital solutions to design, develop and create tools to automate and streamline Laboratory visits and tour support.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. During the academic year, the intern will work remotely part time, up to 20 hours per week. The intern will work full time during the summer and participate in onsite work and meetings during academic breaks, as needed.

You will

  • Analyze existing Laboratory tour and protocol resources.
  • Design, develop, and create a SharePoint site, AI assistant, and supporting process for internal use.
  • Develop automated datasets and Power BI dashboards to display upcoming tours and visits.
  • Develop a secure AI assistant to support protocol tasks.
  • Create a procedural notebook for ongoing administrative management of the site, dashboard, and AI assistant.
  • Train department staff on use and maintenance of the new tools.
  • Support testing, documentation, user feedback collection, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
  • Must be a college or university student in good academic standing enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, business analytics, or a related field.
  • Experience developing AI-enabled applications or using large language model APIs.
  • Experience with programming or software development.
  • Demonstrated experience with SharePoint site design, Power Automate, Power BI dashboard development, or Microsoft Graph
  • Experience documenting technical processes and training nontechnical users.
  • Experience in event operations, protocol, communications, or business-process improvement for a national laboratory.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

Pay Range

$23.26 - $31.62 Hourly

This position is under a step structure. Please note that the step placement is determined by your most recent completed academic year.

Security Clearance

None required. However, this position involves U.S. Export Control; this work must be performed by a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. national, or U.S. protected individual (e.g., refugee, asylee)).

This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
