Mechanical Engineering Supervisor

About the role  

This position encompasses both management and technical/design responsibilities. It is responsible for the supervision of a small team and duties are notionally split at approximately 70% technical/design and 30% management. Responsibilities in both aspects of the role are articulated separately below. 


What the role will involve
 

The responsibilities of your role will include the following: 


Team Leadership & Supervision
 

  • Lead, mentor and support a small team of Mechanical Engineers, driving delivery and technical excellence. 

  • Manage team priorities, workload and resource allocation, escalating issues where required. 

  • Provide performance feedback, support career development and assist with recruitment and onboarding activities. 

  • Promote adherence to quality processes, risk management practices and continuous improvement initiatives. 


Mechanical Engineering
 

  • Design and develop mechanical packaging solutions for microwave subsystems, including form-factor and environmentally constrained applications. 

  • Produce 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, assembly documentation and bills of materials. 

  • Conduct thermal, structural and dynamic analyses using engineering calculations and simulation tools. 

  • Support product qualification activities, including vibration, shock and environmental testing. 

  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost objectives. 


Project & Stakeholder Support
 

  • Manage technical risks, provide clear technical reporting and support project delivery within schedule and budget constraints. 

  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Procurement and external suppliers to support prototype and production activities. 

  • Contribute to bids, proposals, R&D initiatives and technology roadmap discussions. 

  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing and drive improvements in product quality, efficiency and customer satisfaction. 

  • Ensure compliance with AS9100, security requirements and export control regulations. 


What you’ll bring 
 

The role requires the following experience and skills: 

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering. 

  • 6+ years’ prior relevant experience in a similar role. 

  • Eligible for registration with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland (RPEQ). 

  • Experience with modelling software packages, such as Solidworks, for thermal analysis, solid part modelling, dynamic analysis, etc. 

  • Experience with drawing software such as Autocad and/or DraftSight. 

  • Ability to lead small design team. 

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

  • Outstanding time management skills. 

  • Ability to deal with customers and present design details during customer reviews. 

  • Hold Australian Government Security Clearance NV1 (minimum). 


Desirable:
 

  • Expert knowledge of Solidworks, for thermal analysis, solid part modelling, dynamic analysis, etc. 

  • Experience in working with customers to understand project requirements and generate specifications. 

  • Experience with designing for and testing EMI/EMC compliance. 

  • Experience with design for manufacture and developing assembly and test documentation for operation in a production environment. 

  • Experience with a production environment.
