In this role, you will own core compute, storage, directory services, virtualization, and enterprise monitoring capabilities. During the build phase, you will help stand up servers and storage, bring up directory services and virtualization across separate networks, install and tune the monitoring platform, integrate SNMP and syslog collection, and design the dashboards used by the operations team. Responsibilities include sustainment, patching, hardening, monitoring and tooling improvements, incident response, and support to geographically dispersed client sites. This is a hands-on Tier III role that combines systems engineering, infrastructure monitoring, security compliance, troubleshooting, and technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

Systems Administration

  • Administer Windows Server and Linux systems across separate networks.

  • Manage directory services, group policy, and authentication infrastructure.

  • Administer virtualization and hypervisor infrastructure, including capacity and resource management.

  • Maintain access control by creating and managing user accounts and troubleshooting login and access issues.

  • Manage server and storage capacity, backup, and restoration.

  • Apply patches and configuration changes through established change-management processes.

Monitoring & Tools Engineering

  • Install, configure, and tune the enterprise monitoring platform.

  • Build and maintain SNMP polling, syslog collection, trap handling, and alert thresholds.

  • Design and maintain dashboards and views used for continuous operational monitoring.

  • Integrate monitoring with the ticketing platform so alerts generate actionable tickets.

  • Continuously tune alerting to reduce noise and improve signal quality.

Security Engineering & Compliance

  • Apply and maintain hardening baselines.

  • Support Risk Management Framework (RMF) artifacts, control documentation, and audit evidence collection.

  • Support vulnerability scanning, remediation tracking, and patch-compliance reporting.

  • Maintain system security documentation and configuration baselines.

Incident Response & Escalation

  • Serve as a Tier III escalation point for systems, storage, and monitoring incidents.

  • Perform root-cause analysis and drive corrective actions through closure.

  • Monitor server activity and provide advanced technical support.

  • Respond to technical issues after hours and participate in the on-call rotation.

Field & Deployed Support

  • Install and rack equipment and connect required cabling.

  • Perform physical setup and configuration of desktop hardware, software, and peripherals.

  • Build workstations in accordance with established procedures.

  • Deploy to geographically dispersed client facilities for hardware replacement, systems integration, and validation testing.

  • Provide technical direction and training to more junior engineers.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; candidates without a degree may qualify with 8–10 years of related experience on programs of similar size, scope, and complexity.

  • 8+ years of engineering experience supporting technical programs, with the majority in enterprise systems administration or infrastructure monitoring.

  • Hands-on enterprise Windows Server administration, such as Windows Server 2022/2025, including AD DS, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, PKI, PowerShell, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with Linux server administration.

  • Virtualization and hypervisor administration experience.

  • Hands-on experience with at least one enterprise monitoring platform such as SolarWinds, Splunk, PRTG, Datadog, or Elastic.

  • Working knowledge of SNMP and syslog collection and alerting.

  • Strong TCP/IP troubleshooting: IPv4/IPv6, subnetting, VLAN/802.1Q, LACP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, routing/switching, ACL/firewall dependencies, and MTU.

  • Server, storage, network appliance, console, and workstation installation/troubleshooting, including out-of-band management such as iDRAC, iLO, XClarity, Redfish-based tools, or equivalent.

  • Working knowledge of CAT 5/CAT 6 cabling and connectors.

  • Experience with a ticketing platform, Visio, and Microsoft Office.

  • Physical capability to lift and mount equipment and work under raised floors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Microsoft certification at the MCSE or Azure Administrator level; RHCSA/RHCE; or VMware VCP.

  • Security+, CySA+, CISSP, GSEC, or GCIA certification.

  • Experience with NIST 800-53, CNSSI guidance, RMF, or DISA STIGs.

  • Scripting and automation with PowerShell, Python, or Ansible; experience with Git.

  • administration experience.

  • Cloud platform experience with AWS or Azure.

  • ITIL Foundations certification.

  • Experience standing up or operating a data center, network operations center, or similar facility.
