European Air-Cooled Chiller Engineering | Dublin, Ireland

What you will do

Johnson Controls has an exciting Principal Product Engineer opportunity based at our Dublin, Ireland location, supporting our new European air-cooled chiller engineering organization. If you are a technical leader who enjoys mechanical design, testing, data analysis, and project management, this could be the right position for you.

In this principal role you will work independently with minimal direction to develop the mechanical design and performance of air-cooled chiller components and systems engineered for the European market. You will act as the technical leader for projects and the design team, represent the design team to manufacturing through initiating and executing design changes, mentor and serve as a role model for Engineer II and Senior Engineers, and develop and maintain the skill sets and work practices needed to align with the organization’s expectations.

How you will do it

  • Maintains an expert-level understanding of the theories, concepts, technical principles, and processes related to the fluid, thermal, refrigeration, and other mechanical aspects of air-cooled chillers
  • Works independently with minimal direction, independently developing the approach to mechanical design solutions, and leads process improvement teams
  • Plans complex projects and product releases; able to complete the full set of designs for features or products, and defines specifications for multiple features or products
  • Applies European mechanical and safety codes and directives, including CE marking, the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), and the Machinery Directive, and harmonized standards such as EN 378 (refrigerating systems safety) and EN 14511 (chiller performance rating)
  • Acts as the technical leader of projects and the product team, serving as a mentor and role model for Engineer II and Senior Engineers
  • Works closely with the design and manufacturing teams to generate layout concepts and system configurations that balance cost, performance, and reliability
  • Coordinates and helps execute test programs to validate the performance and reliability of mechanical systems and components; analyzes, designs, modifies, and troubleshoots mechanical sub-components and sub-systems based on test data
  • Generates and reviews technical documentation for use within the product team, and represents Engineering in cross-functional activities
  • Recognized as an expert in one or more products or features and in one or more technical disciplines
  • Contributes to the on-time completion of programs and regularly reports on the status of projects
  • Adheres to the Company’s Code of Conduct and Business Ethics standards

What we look for

Required

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline / science; MS preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a related field, having released one or more products
  • Strong understanding of fluid and thermal principles
  • Working knowledge of European mechanical and refrigeration codes and standards (CE marking, PED, Machinery Directive, EN 378)
  • Proficient in mechanical design, able to conceptualize and implement design ideas into the product
  • Proficient at organizing and processing large amounts of data
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train other engineers and to act as a technical leader
  • Experience with product development, project management, and sustaining of configurable systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, primarily within Europe

Preferred

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent professional registration
  • Experience engineering industrial products in engineer-to-order, applied, or made-to-order environments
  • Familiarity with refrigeration systems and the EU F-Gas Regulation
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems and motor-driven mechanical engineering design and test
  • Experience applying European regulatory standards such as EN 378, EN 14511, and the Ecodesign / ErP framework
