Staff Software Engineer, Orders Platform

Team: IT

Location: US

Commitment: Full-time

Workplace Type: remote

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Orders Platform based in United States.

This is a high-impact platform engineering role focused on the systems that orchestrate complex commerce workflows at significant scale.
You will help shape the technical strategy for the full order lifecycle, from creation and payment through fulfillment, cancellation, and post-order operations.
The role combines deep distributed-systems expertise with architectural leadership across multiple engineering and business domains.
You will lead multi-team initiatives that improve reliability, correctness, scalability, observability, and operational safety.
You will also help evolve platform capabilities for emerging AI and agentic commerce use cases.
Success requires strong technical judgment, hands-on engineering ability, and the influence to align senior stakeholders around durable solutions.
This is an opportunity to build foundational infrastructure that enables other teams to innovate faster and more safely.

Accountabilities

    • Lead complex, multi-team engineering initiatives that improve the reliability, scalability, correctness, and operational performance of a large-scale Orders platform.
    • Define and drive technical strategy for the complete order lifecycle, including order state models, service contracts, guarantees, and data integrity requirements.
    • Architect and evolve event-driven, idempotent workflows supporting order creation, updates, cancellations, substitutions, payments, refunds, and other critical commerce operations.
    • Establish clear system invariants, observability practices, and auditable histories across distributed services.
    • Partner with engineering teams across Payments, Fulfillment, Catalog, Fraud and Identity, Data, Infrastructure, and other domains to develop reusable platform capabilities.
    • Modernize platform architecture through improved consistency models, multi-tenant abstractions, failure isolation, secure integrations, and enhanced operability.
    • Design secure, policy-driven platform capabilities that enable automated and agentic commerce workflows.
    • Develop APIs and tools that allow AI systems and agents to interact with order workflows safely, reliably, and measurably.
    • Lead architecture and design reviews, technical spikes, launches, and cross-team engineering efforts.
    • Contribute hands-on to critical code paths while providing technical guidance and coaching to other engineers.
    • Help establish strong engineering practices around reliability, performance, service ownership, incident response, and long-term maintainability.
    • Communicate technical direction clearly with senior engineers, Product, Infrastructure, Data, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
    • Requirements

      • 10+ years of experience designing, developing, and operating large-scale backend or platform systems in production.
      • Demonstrated success leading complex technical initiatives from architecture and implementation through rollout and ongoing operations.
      • Strong expertise in distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, high-volume APIs, asynchronous processing, event-driven systems, and idempotent workflows.
      • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages such as Go, Java, or Python.
      • Production experience with both relational and NoSQL databases.
      • Experience operating mission-critical services, including on-call ownership, service-level objectives or error budgets, performance optimization, incident management, and post-incident reviews.
      • Demonstrated professional experience using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate design exploration, implementation, code review, or software quality.
      • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical direction across senior engineering and cross-functional teams.
      • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
      • Experience building payments, orders, logistics, or other high-integrity transactional platforms is highly valuable.
      • Deep familiarity with asynchronous workflows and event-driven architectures such as Kafka or Pub/Sub, including at-least-once or exactly-once processing and outbox patterns.
      • Experience integrating diverse internal services and external partners, including ownership of API contracts, data models, service expectations, and operational readiness.
      • Experience building or evolving multi-tenant and extensible platforms that support rapid onboarding of new products, payment methods, incentives, or partner integrations.
      • Strong observability and reliability engineering knowledge, including tracing, metrics, alerting, circuit breaking, and chaos testing.
      • Understanding of secure-by-default service design, including tokenization, secrets management, PCI requirements, and PII protection.
      • Interest in applying AI and agentic patterns to platform engineering in ways that are safe, reliable, and measurable.
      • Benefits

        • Remote-first work environment with flexibility to work from home, an office, or another suitable location.
        • Competitive U.S. base salary based on permanent work location:
          • $265,000–$279,500 USD in CA, NY, CT, and NJ.
          • $254,000–$268,000 USD in WA.
          • $243,000–$256,500 USD in OR, DE, ME, MA, MD, NH, RI, VT, DC, PA, VA, CO, TX, IL, and HI.
          • $221,000–$233,000 USD in all other states.
          • New-hire equity grant and eligibility for annual equity refresh grants.
          • Market-competitive benefits tailored to the employee's location.
          • Flexible approach to where and how employees work.
          • Opportunities to collaborate with teams across engineering, product, data, infrastructure, and business functions.
          • Opportunity to work on high-scale commerce infrastructure supporting hundreds of millions of transactions annually.
          • Exposure to advanced distributed systems, event-driven architecture, AI-assisted development, and emerging agentic commerce technologies.
          • Regular opportunities to participate in cross-functional and in-person team events while maintaining a flexible work model.
