ICON is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer II to help in the development of ICON’s latest print systems on the Phoenix Team. This team is responsible for delivering the machine known as Phoenix to Serial Production. As a Senior Systems Engineer II at ICON, you will be in a hands-on development and technical design role with responsibility for the creation and support of well-designed, maintainable systems. This role is based at ICON’s Austin, TX office. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, integrate, and manage high-level systems over their entire life cycle.
  • Ensure that all aspects of a product are considered and integrated effectively to meet the specified requirements.
  • Develop and refine requirements to ensure they are measurable & traceable. Ensure validation tests, analyses, demonstrations, and inspections are logged into the RTM.
  • Develop system architecture that meets the requirements.
  • Ensure all subsystems and components can integrate to meet operational and functional needs.
  • Use modeling and simulation tools as necessary to analyze system behavior.
  • Identify risks when it comes to integrating subsystems and components and collaborate cross functionally to mitigate them.
  • Develop validation procedures to ensure the system performs as intended and established methods for verifying the system meets requirements.
  • Apply electrical, mechanical, and control system design in the development of robotic platforms for construction applications, focusing on motion platforms, custom robotic manipulators, remote sensing, and object manipulation.
  • Design, create, assemble and test prototypes and specify instrumentation and architecture for various R&D projects.
  • Provide hands-on, troubleshooting, process, and manufacturing support as well designing, implementing, and integrating solutions in a fast-paced environment with a quick AGILE development cycle.
  • Create design solutions for prototype equipment utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes including CAD Design in Solidworks / Solidworks Electrical Schematic.
  • Must be willing to perform a wide range of tasks on a daily basis (e.g. Transition from office work to field work at a moment’s notice) as well to contribute expertise to the overall product development process.
  • Assist in assembly of robotic systems for on and off-planet applications.
  • Assist in management and configuration of facility upgrades and equipment installations.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of autonomous robotic systems in harsh outdoor environments.
  • Establish individual and team goals consistent with overall company OKRs.
  • Assist in productization documentation and support of cross functional deployment of products to the field.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. degree in System Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant science with 12+ years of experience or a masters degree with 8+ years equivalent experience or proven experience in similar roles.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype designs in both hardware and software, then move to DFM and productization on fast time-tables.
  • Proven record of excelling within an engineering development team to deliver on-time milestones.
  • Ability to use first principles creatively to solve difficult problems.
  • Experience with design of industrial equipment and machinery, industrial robotics, mobile robotics, and an understanding and adapting to the field requirements for such machines, with knowledge of complex automation systems.
  • Experience designing electrical power distribution, cable harnesses and Electrical Panels for Industrial Machinery.
  • Experience in working with manufacturers, distributors, and building external partnerships.
  • Proficiency using Electrical Schematics generation and management software.
  • Proven Track-Record of Delivering products which meet customer requirements.
  • Adept at communicating in a collaborative team environment and seeking optimum solutions with other team members.
  • Knowledge of the AGILE methodology of project management.
  • A service-oriented attitude when in a support role.
  • Ability to prioritize and stay cool in a dynamic start-up environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 6+ years of working experience designing and building industrial automation equipment or related experience in an applicable field.
  • Previous start-up experience, and/or a resourceful innovative nature with an ability to streamline or develop efficient processes.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, and the ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Industrial safety system experience.
  • High performance communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to less technical people.
  • A hunger for learning and personal growth.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with highly integrated and autonomous robotic systems at scale.

 

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be prepared to work, in part, in extreme environments: temps > 100 degrees or below freezing, sun, rain, mud, lack of electricity, etc. 
  • Must be able to travel 4+ weeks per year internationally.
