Huawei's Kepler Research Center in Jena is responsible for advanced technical research, architecture evolution design and strategic technical planning.

The Optical Communication and Application Technology Laboratory in Jena focuses on optical telecommunication use cases (optical subsystems for switches, optical wireless), automotive (AR-HUD, headlamp design, displays), illumination, industrial lasers, optical metrology, optical coating design and other optical subsystems. The department engages in local research and collaborates with academic and industrial partners from the European ecosystem.

Intern - Optical Applications (m/f/d)


Your mission 

  • Track the top-level publications and patent about optical wireless communication, optical display, optical sensing, optical imaging, and nano/micro-optics applications, output literature analysis report.

  • Perform industry progress and trend analysis and assist identify high value technologies or directions for related business scope, output technical insight report.

  • Perform design work according to the project requirement, including free space optics like optical display, imaging lens, projectors, or flat optics like meta-lens, diffraction optical elements, and holographic optical elements. 

  • Assist formulate device specifications and proceed manufacture process, help to build up experiment/test setup or prototype, and perform data collection, organization, and analysis.


Your areas of expertise

  • Currently enrolled as a Bachelor or Master student in optics, optoelectronics, physics, information and communications, computer science, or mathematics.

  • Strong theoretical knowledge in geometrical, diffractive and/or physical optics, applicants with hands-on experience is preferred.

  • Experience on optical design and simulation software like Zemax, LightTools, CodeV, Comsol, FDTD, GSolver etc. Programming skills like Python and/or MATLAB are considered as a plus.

  • High interesting and strong willingness to exploring innovative technologies, ability and experience to independently search the literature and patent in optical area.

  • Fluent in English (written and oral) and open to cooperation and to work in a team with multiple cultural backgrounds collaboration.
