What a College Intern - Pen Health & Servicing Algorithm Development Engineer does at HP

• HP's Writing Systems team is responsible for delivering outstanding print quality, reliability, and customer experience across HP Inkjet products. The intern will work on Pen Health technologies that ensure printhead nozzle readiness throughout the life of the printer.This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to the development and optimization of printhead servicing algorithms that improve nozzle health, print quality, ink efficiency, and product reliability.
• Opportunity to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across Writing System, Mechanical, Firmware, Data Science, and Systems Engineering teams, while driving alignment through the communication of project progress, technical insights, and recommendations to both engineering teams and management.

Servicing Algorithm Development

• Drive the development and optimization of Pen Health servicing algorithms for HP inkjet printers.
• Analyse nozzle health data to understand the effectiveness of servicing actions such as priming, wiping, spitting, and recovery routines.
• Evaluate servicing performance under different customer usage models and environmental conditions.
• Develop data analysis tools and models to assess servicing efficiency, nozzle recovery, and print quality outcomes.
• Investigate opportunities to reduce maintenance ink consumption while maintaining robust nozzle health performance.
• Algorithm validation through controlled experiments and printer testing.

Data Analytics and Software Development

• Develop scripts and tools for automated processing and visualization of Pen Health test results.
• Analyse large datasets generated from laboratory and life-cycle testing.
• Apply statistical analysis and machine learning techniques where applicable.

 

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in:
  • Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering
  • Related Engineering disciplines
• Able to commit for a 5-6 months full time internship, starting in January 2027.
• Strong programming skills in Python or similar languages.
• Good analytical, problem-solving abilities and strong communication & presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

• Knowledge of machine learning, data analytics, or statistical modelling.
• Experience handling large datasets and developing engineering analysis tools.
• Interest in printer technologies, reliability engineering, and customer-focused product development.
