Our Engineering Team

Our Engineering Team owns the code and infrastructure that lets our customers do powerful things with our product, simply and intuitively. We care about delivering the right product iterations quickly - we build minimum viable products, deploy to production multiple times per day, listen to customer feedback, and iterate.

At Hive, we ingest high-volume data in real-time from 20+ integrations (like Ticketmaster and Shopify), we store and query billions of customer data points, and we send 200MM+ of email/SMS every month to our client’s customers. We’ve built a growing, profitable business and the scale of technical problems we’re solving is quickly growing too!

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about building teams and has a track record of delivering high quality software. It’s an exciting time to join as our Engineering team is set to double in size this year. You will be successful in this role if you are able to provide technical guidance and coach on performance while fostering a collaborative work environment.  

What you’ll get up to

• Manage our reliability and integration engineering pods. Coaching and mentoring the team as well as setting and holding a high bar for performance.

• Drive the initiatives and priorities for your teams, working with dependencies across the company

• Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Hive’s  engineering leadership team

• Recruit great engineers, in collaboration with our People team, to join Hive

• Improve our processes and tools to help team be more productive and deliver better outcomes

Who you are

• You’ve spent 2+ years managing  an effective engineering team

• You have 5+ years of hands-on experience building production-grade web applications

• You’ve seen the inner workings of how software is made by a team on a shared codebase - you can articulate what communication, development processes and tooling you do/don’t find effective and why

• You've thrived while working on a semi or fully-remote team (communicate effectively async, work independently, know when to ask for help, self-manage your time and effort)

• You're a direct, empathetic communicator, who believes that thoughtful feedback is a mandatory input to growth

• You're never done learning - you constantly drive to understand how things work, how you can improve, and how you can have an impact at different levels

Technologies we use & teach

• Frontend: React, Typescript

• Backend: Python, Django

• Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, Clickhouse

• Infra: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform

• Experience with these is a plus, but we know smart people are quick learners!

Nice to haves

Bonus points if you:

• Previously established and managed site reliability metrics, including monitoring site performance, analytics, and other infrastructure metrics 

• Have 1-3 years of experience leading a team in a larger more scaled environment

• Are able to clearly articulate why you made the intentional decision to go down a management track 

Comp/Benefits Package

• Meaningful salary and equity: you're rewarded based on impact

  • The compensation range for this role is $140,000 to $200,000. This compensation range takes into account a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to job-related skills, experience and relevant training, and business and organizational needs. The band reflects potential growth in role and new team members, when hired with the expectations listed in the posting, will come in closer to the midpoint ($160,000 - $175,000).

• Work fully remote in Canada: where you’re most productive whether that be from your house, or elsewhere. We just ask that you have legal work authorization in Canada and unfortunately, we are unable to hire within Quebec at this time.

We started our company inside a University of Waterloo computer lab in early 2014, graduated from Y Combinator that summer (S14 batch) and have been growing ever since. Originally based in Kitchener, our team is now 100% remote and located all across Canada!
