Position Summary

As our first Cloud Cost Engineer, you will play a critical role in managing and optimizing cloud expenditures across our organization. You will be responsible for providing accurate spend forecasts, implementing Harness’s internal use of the Harness CCM Module,  and ensuring that all cloud-related costs are effectively monitored and controlled. Your role will involve working closely with development teams, Finance, and the Architecture board to achieve significant cost savings while ensuring efficient cloud utilization.
 
This is a hands-on role, and the engineer will be expected to be comfortable pushing commits to non-prod environments, creating diagrams/documentation, and diving into K8s-manifests, helm-charts, and OpenTofu scripts.

About the role

  • Cost Forecasting:
    • Provide Finance with a comprehensive monthly forecast of cloud costs for the entire cloud estate, ensuring accuracy and alignment with financial planning.
  • CCM Implementation:
    • Own and oversee the implementation of internal Cloud Cost Management (CCM) solutions, ensuring that they are effectively integrated and utilized.

  • Cost Savings Achievement:
    • Identify and drive cost-saving initiatives by providing technical leadership or pushing commits. 
  • Internal Consulting and Support:
    • Provide hands-on consulting and support for new cloud builds, focusing on cost optimization strategies to minimize cost while maintaining performance and velocity.
  • ADR Review and Signoff:
    • Review all Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) for potential cloud cost implications and provide signoff where appropriate, ensuring cost considerations are incorporated into design decisions.
  • Reservations and Savings Plans Management:
    • Manage cloud reservations and savings plans to maximize cost efficiency and ensure optimal utilization of reserved instances and savings opportunities.
  • Tagging and Labeling Policies:
    • Develop and maintain tagging and labeling policies, as well as implement any necessary technical measures to facilitate accurate and actionable cost reporting.

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Architect) are a plus.
  • Proven experience in hands-on management of costs in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, K8s, and CloudSql
  • Experience as a DevOps or Infrastructure Engineer is a bonus
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data 
  • Owner mentality, with the ability to see a problem and fix it
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non technical teams alike 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Willingness to work cross-timezone to collaborate with dev-teams from Silicon Valley to Ireland to Bangalore
  • Ability to understand business impacts of both costs and cost savings
  • Willingness/Desire to teach and evangelize about cloud costs
