Guideline is looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Compliance and Core 401(k) teams. As a manager within Guideline’s engineering organization, you'll work closely with Product and Design to establish roadmaps, provide mentorship and growth opportunities to your engineers, and be responsible for the impact of your teams. We're a fast growing company and successful management means getting hands on with code and design reviews and playing a part in the continued development of our engineering team.
What You Will Work On
- Architect and develop core cross-cutting services that affect all users.
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and highly available backend systems that can efficiently process large volumes of data and requests.
- Collaborate with other teams (e.g., Product, Infrastructure, Data, Frontend) to ensure alignment of system designs with business needs and technical requirements.
- Drive technical decision-making and continuously improve architecture based on performance, scalability, and reliability metrics.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, refactoring, and documentation to maintain high-quality codebases.
- Empower teams to provide high quality software by removing barriers and unblocking.
- Support your engineers through empathetic leadership, mentorship, transparency, and accountability.
What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years of experience managing a team of 5 or more engineers.
- Extensive experience designing and building scalable, distributed systems, with a deep understanding of system architecture.
- Experience with mission-critical backend systems, including performance optimization, fault tolerance, and horizontal scaling.
- Proficiency in backend programming languages such as Ruby, Java, or Python.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, caching, messaging queues, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Honeycomb, or similar tools.
- Confident in spending up to 20-25% of your time contributing by writing code alongside your team as your time and priorities permit.
- Competent in setting expectations, giving transparent feedback, and creating a culture of psychological safety.
We understand that not everyone will be an expert in all of these areas on Day One. We value people and will consider someone with the fundamentals who wants to develop their skills.
