Product Engineer
Department: Tech
Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time
Location: Wallingford, Oxfordshire, Wallingford, UK - Hybrid, Hybrid
Our Product and Engineering teams sit at the centre of students, employers, and education providers. Together, we design, build, and continuously improve digital products that power early careers recruitment, learning, and talent engagement—used by millions of students and thousands of organisations across the UK and beyond.
As a Product Engineer, you will help shape and deliver product experiences across our early careers ecosystem. Working at the intersection of engineering, product, UX, and data, you will own initiatives from early concept through to launch, measurement, and optimisation; turning product strategy into experiences that resonate with Gen Z users.
This role requires someone who combines engineering excellence with strong product judgement and a passion for user experience. You will be expected to take ownership beyond feature delivery, measuring impact, learning from user behaviour, and ensuring product improvements deliver meaningful outcomes for students, employers, and the wider business.
Key Metrics of Success
- End-to-end delivery speed and engineering efficiency – reduced time from discovery to release, increased throughput, fewer handovers, and effective use of AI/automation to accelerate delivery.
- Product impact and business outcomes – measurable improvements in engagement, conversion, retention, usage, and marketplace performance driven by shipped product work.
- Product quality and data-driven decision making – higher usability, performance, accessibility, and maintainability, supported by strong use of analytics, experimentation, and behavioural insight.
Outcomes
- Student Growth, Engagement & Marketplace Performance by improving acquisition, activation, conversion, retention, repeat usage, applications, and employer–candidate matching through continuous product iteration and optimisation.
- Exceptional User Experience & Product Quality by delivering fast, intuitive, accessible, mobile-first, and scalable experiences that reduce friction and improve task completion while maintaining high performance and maintainability.
- Data-Driven Product Performance & Decision-Making by embedding analytics, instrumentation, experimentation, feature flags, and monitoring into delivery so every product decision is validated against measurable impact on engagement, conversion, retention, or marketplace outcomes.
Person Specification
- Strong software engineering experience building customer-facing digital products.
- Experience working closely with Product Managers, Graphic Designers, and cross-functional teams.
- Strong product instincts and UX awareness.
- Comfortable using data and behavioural insight to improve products.
- Passion for elegant, user-centric experiences and product quality.
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly.
- Proactive, curious, and highly motivated to take ownership of outcomes.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, evolving environments.
- Interest in AI tools and modern engineering practices.
