Senior Software Engineer, Field Software

Responsibilities

Design, build, and own backend services supporting the full lifecycle of Gridware devices and field assets.
Build GraphQL APIs supporting an offline-first mobile application used by field crews and utility linemen.
Develop reliable data pipelines and integrations for exchanging asset data with utilities.
Design systems and data models representing grid infrastructure, assets, and the relationships between them.
Own systems end to end, from architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and production operation.
Work directly with field crews to understand operational workflows and see your software used in the field.
Partner closely with Field Operations, Product, Data, and other engineering teams to translate real-world workflows into scalable software.
Contribute to architecture and technical decisions as Gridware’s systems and field deployments scale.

Required Skills

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Strong experience with Python and PostgreSQL, including making schema changes to live production databases.
• Experience designing and building production GraphQL APIs and data pipelines where correctness and reliability matter.
• Experience building and operating distributed systems, including debugging and understanding failures in production.
• Experience deploying and operating services in cloud environments. We use AWS and Kubernetes.
• Experience using AI coding tools effectively while maintaining ownership of the design, quality, and correctness of the code produced.
• Strong technical judgment, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Track record of owning software systems end to end and proactively identifying and addressing problems.
 

Bonus Skills

• Experience with Apollo Federation, SQLAlchemy, or async Python.
• Experience building backend systems for mobile or offline-first applications.
• Experience with TypeScript and contributing across the full stack.
• Experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka or SQS.
• Experience with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, or Sentry.
• Experience with data lakehouse technologies such as Databricks, Apache Iceberg, or Trino.
• Experience with geospatial data, GIS, or utility data.
• Experience building software for mobile applications, IoT or connected devices, utilities, or other physical-world systems.
