Description
Software Engineer – Mobile Development
Location: Burgess Hill, West Sussex - Full-time, on-site
Salary: £34,500-£55,000, dependent on experience, technical capability and evidence demonstrated throughout the recruitment process.
Build on your software engineering skills and develop a specialism in mobile technology
Are you a Software Developer or Engineer with strong programming foundations, looking to take the next step in your career and develop your expertise in mobile application development?
Perhaps you've gained experience in Java, C#, .NET, JavaScript or another programming language and are interested in applying your skills to mobile technology. Or perhaps you've already started developing Android or iOS applications and are looking for an opportunity to build on that experience.
At Grayce, we recognise that great software engineers don't always come with experience in every technology. We're interested in your existing capabilities, your approach to solving technical problems and your potential to learn and develop.
We're recruiting Software Engineers to join Grayce as Technology Consultants, working through one of our established consultancy partners to support a leading global financial services organisation in Burgess Hill, West Sussex.
You'll have the opportunity to contribute to real-world software development projects, build specialist expertise in Android engineering and benefit from structured professional development, technical training and ongoing career support.
The opportunity
You'll join a collaborative engineering environment focused on developing, enhancing and maintaining mobile applications within a large-scale technology organisation.
Working alongside experienced engineers, product owners, QA specialists and designers, you'll apply your existing software development skills while developing your understanding of mobile technologies, particularly Android.
This is an opportunity for someone with practical software engineering capability who wants to expand their technical knowledge, gain valuable experience and develop a specialism in mobile application development.
Your responsibilities could include:
- Developing, maintaining and enhancing Android applications, contributing to existing functionality and new features as your technical expertise develops.
- Applying your existing programming knowledge to write clean, reliable and maintainable code.
- Learning and applying Android development technologies, frameworks and engineering practices.
- Investigating and resolving bugs, performance issues and technical challenges.
- Working with REST APIs and understanding how applications integrate with wider technology services.
- Contributing to unit testing, integration testing and automated testing processes.
- Supporting improvements to application performance, reliability and code quality.
- Working with existing codebases, including understanding, maintaining and improving established applications.
- Collaborating with engineers, QA, product and design colleagues to develop effective technical solutions.
- Participating in code reviews, sharing ideas and contributing to continuous improvement within the engineering team.
What we're looking for
We're looking for motivated Software Engineers with a good foundation in programming and practical development experience who are ready to progress their careers.
You don't need to be an experienced Android developer to apply. We're equally interested in candidates from wider software engineering backgrounds who can demonstrate the technical foundations, problem-solving ability and willingness to learn needed to transition into mobile development.
Essential experience and skills
- Practical software development experience gained through professional employment, internships, apprenticeships or substantial technical projects, with the ability to demonstrate your contributions.
- Working knowledge of at least one programming language, such as Java, C#, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Kotlin or Swift.
- A good understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including programming logic, object-oriented principles and writing maintainable code.
- Experience developing, testing, debugging or improving software applications.
- The ability to understand existing code, investigate technical issues and apply logical problem-solving approaches.
- An understanding of software testing principles and the importance of code quality.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the confidence to contribute within a technical team.
- A proactive approach to learning new technologies, taking ownership and developing your technical expertise.
- A genuine interest in mobile application development and the motivation to develop your skills in Android engineering.
Particularly advantageous
- Experience with Java, Kotlin or other object-oriented programming languages.
- Exposure to Android, iOS or cross-platform mobile application development, including React Native or Flutter.
- Familiarity with REST APIs and application integration.
- Experience using Git or other version control tools.
- Exposure to unit testing, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines or build tools.
- Familiarity with Android Studio, Jetpack Compose or modern Android development practices.
- Experience working within Agile development teams or collaborative engineering environments.
We're particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate what they've built, explain their technical contributions and show how they've approached learning new technologies or solving unfamiliar problems.
Whether your experience is in backend development, web applications, mobile engineering or another software development environment, we'd encourage you to apply if you have strong programming foundations and an interest in developing a mobile engineering specialism.
Right to Work Requirements
This requirement applies specifically to Grayce Consultant roles due to the nature of our client-deployed model. Grayce does not have a sponsorship licence and is therefore unable to sponsor visa applications.
Due to the expected recruitment and onboarding timeline and the minimum two-year programme commitment, you must have the right to work in the UK without requiring Grayce sponsorship at any point within the next 36 months.
