Staff Acoustic Systems Engineer

Location: Flexible (San Mateo, CA). This role offers the flexibility to work from home, within proximity to the office location.

The Role

GoPro’s audio engineering team creates immersive audio experiences for our customers.  On this team, you will develop audio systems that capture amazing content from formula drift racers to surfing mavericks to intimate acoustic guitar performances.  You will find and create new audio technologies for GoPro devices.  You will develop the latest audio systems for GoPro helmets, cameras and accessories.

You will develop audio systems as you: define requirements, select and integrate audio components, verify HW performance, develop new features, create and tune audio algorithms, capture various use cases in the field, and incorporating listening feedback.

You will coordinate with internal teams (product management, engineering, operations, program management, etc.) and external partners (suppliers and contract manufacturers) to ensure audio is awesome!  You will be responsible for audio performance for the products you design.

What You Will Do

• Develop and verify audio systems for GoPro devices
• Discover, define, develop, and deploy audio technologies into GoPro devices.
• Enjoy a wide variety of work activities. Test audio HW in the morning and develop audio algorithms in the afternoon.
• Define and develop new audio test protocols
• Create new audio manufacturing test systems

Skills We’re Excited About

• BS, MS or Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, preferably related to acoustics
• 5+ years of experience developing audio systems for portable consumer electronics, including some of the following activities:
  • Defining audio requirements
  • Evaluating audio hardware in lab and in production
  • Integrating acoustic transducers into mechanics
  • Experience with audio test systems (HATS/KEMAR, Audio Precision, Listen, etc.)
  • Creating and tuning audio algorithms (Wind reduction, AGC/limiters/compressors, stereo)
  • Developing test methods to evaluate new technologies
  • Developing tools for evaluating audio performance
  • Recording audio in the outdoors
• Ability to work well with other humans

• Designing devices for use in and out of wind and water
• Modeling and testing acoustic transducers
• Knowing mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing processes
• Knowing DSP fundamentals
• Knowing Wireless and USB audio protocols
• Knowing machine learning based processing

The pay range for this role is between $133,000 - $173,100. Actual pay within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including your residence location and prior work experience. Equity, benefits, and a discretionary bonus may be additional forms of compensation for this role and are not included in the provided pay range.
