Senior Electrical Engineer - Battery Management System Design

Location: Flexible (Shenzhen) - This role requires proximity to an office location with the flexibility to work from home.

The Role

GoPro is seeking a top-tier candidate to take on the responsibilities of a Staff Electrical Engineer. In this position, you will be responsible for electrical hardware development of consumer-grade camera. You will work closely with an internal inter-disciplinary team and outside partners to drive key aspects of product definition, design, optimization, implementation and test. You must be responsive, flexible, goal-oriented with attentions to details, and able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment.

What You Will Do

• BMS (battery management system) design for action camera and power bank etc., including cell specification, PCM and gauge IC selection, battery pack spec and charging /discharging circuit etc.
• Ensure BMS designs meet product requirements and safety standards.
• Work closely with the suppliers to ensure seamless integration of battery components into the overall product design and maintain quality standards for battery components. Conduct design reviews, test plan, and validation.
• Optimize battery performance, safety, reliability, and power efficiency.
• Conduct thorough risk assessments and adhere to safety standards.
• Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies related to BMS design.
• Participate in, as well as conduct electrical design reviews and collaborate with the cross functional team to accomplish project deliverables.
• Create test requirements documents, define test limits for validating the design to meet functional, quality, reliability, manufacturability, and safety requirements.
• Track and resolve technical issues working with cross functional teams.
• Support compliance team to ensure BMS design meet certification requirement.
  
  

Skills We’re Excited About

• MS or BA in electrical engineering or equivalent with 10+ years of experience in BMS design of electrical consumer product.
• Proficiency in battery packs design with cell selection, circuit design with PCM and gauge IC selection, battery modeling, simulation, and testing.
• Knowledge of cell aging mechanisms, including capacity, voltage, energy density and charge &discharge characteristics.
• Proficiency in design safety features to prevent thermal runway, overcharging, and short circuits.
• Familiar with the safety standards (e.g., UN 38.3, IEC 62133) and compliance requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Proven ability in investigating root cause, complex design debugging, and problem solving independently with minimal guidance.
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English, able to work independently and cross functionally.

• Experiences in extending battery lifespan through proper charging and discharging strategies.
• Experience in the thermal management systems to compliance requirements.
• Understanding degradation factors of lithium-ion battery and implementing strategies to mitigate capacity loss over time.
• Familiarity with battery ODM processes and collaboration
