Staff Embedded Software Engineer – Connected Medical Devices

Location: Waukesha

Time Type: Full time

Job Description

Job Description Summary

Help Build the Future of Connected Neonatal Care
Our mission is simple: help send mothers and infants home healthy. The Infant Care team builds safe, reliable, connected systems that support clinicians in NICUs and Labor & Delivery worldwide.
In this role you’ll build the connectivity, networking, and cybersecurity software that lets medical devices securely exchange patient information with hospital systems, monitoring stations, and cloud platforms — making sure critical patient data is available when it matters most.

Job Description

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build connectivity, networking, and communication services for connected neonatal devices
  • Implement secure communications using modern networking and cybersecurity practices (TLS, certificates, secure design)
  • Develop fleet management, remote monitoring, and cloud-connected device management capabilities
  • Build and maintain wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity features
  • Integrate devices with hospital information systems (we’ll support you in learning healthcare interoperability such as HL7/FHIR if it’s new to you)
  • Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews; support verification, validation, and regulatory compliance
  • Investigate and resolve connectivity, performance, and reliability issues
  • Collaborate with systems, cybersecurity, quality, and clinical engineering teams

Who You Are

You’re a strong embedded/systems software engineer who enjoys networking and connectivity challenges. You don’t need healthcare experience — if you’ve built secure, connected software in another high-reliability domain, your skills likely translate directly. Backgrounds that thrive here include connected/IoT devices, telecommunications, industrial automation, networking/distributed systems, and other embedded platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong proficiency in C and/or C++
  • Experience developing software on Linux or Embedded Linux
  • Experience with networking fundamentals — TCP/IP, socket programming, secure communications, distributed systems, or device connectivity
  • Experience building high-reliability software with solid testing, debugging, and code-quality practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have — Not Required)

  • Healthcare interoperability: HL7 v2.x (construction, parsing, MLLP transport), FHIR, or IHE profiles (PDQ, ACM, DEC)
  • Connected medical device development or other regulated environments
  • Embedded Linux build systems such as Yocto
  • Wi-Fi / wireless communications
  • MQTT and event-driven architectures; REST APIs and cloud integration
  • Fleet management or IoT device management platforms
  • Cybersecurity: TLS, certificate-based auth, threat modeling, secure software design
  • CI/CD, automated testing, static analysis (Coverity); Qt/QML familiarity

Technology Stack

C/C++ • Embedded Linux, Yocto • TCP/IP, TLS/SSL • HL7 v2.x, FHIR, MLLP • MQTT, REST • Wi-Fi • Qt/QML • Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Coverity, Jama, Gazelle

You are not expected to know all of these. We’ll help you ramp on what you don’t.

Don’t meet every qualification? Great candidates rarely check every box. If your experience aligns with many of the core responsibilities and you’re excited to build technology that improves patient care, we encourage you to apply.
