Job Title
Android Application Framework Developer - Device EngineeringAbout Your Role
Clover is a global leader in point-of-sale (POS) platforms powering millions of small businesses worldwide with integrated hardware, software, and secure payment solutions. We are seeking a highly energized, disciplined, and tech-passionate Android Application Framework Developer to join our Device Engineering team in Sunnyvale, CA. In this high-impact systems role, you will help build, certify, and operate Clover’s next-generation Android-based smart terminal devices. You will bridge the gap between high-level Android applications and low-level hardware, taking direct ownership of core Android framework services, POS peripheral integration, and hardware communication architectures. If you thrive in an agile environment alongside like-minded, highly skilled engineers and are excited about building software that interacts directly with physical devices, we want to talk to you!
What You Will Do
- Android Framework & Hardware Integration: Design and build Android application framework services and background daemons that directly interface with external hardware peripherals, payment kernels, and low-level microcontrollers.
- Peripheral Architecture & Vendor SDKs: Integrate POS vendor SDKs and build robust communication pipelines for external hardware including receipt printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners, and weighing scales.
- USB & Network Protocol Management: Manage Android USB OTG Host APIs, handle USB attach/detach events, manage dynamic USB hardware permissions, and implement socket programming for network-connected peripherals.
- System Infrastructure & Data Sync: Add new capabilities to core platform infrastructure and services, ensuring low-latency, sub-second data synchronization and communication across diverse terminal device types.
- Defect Triage & Troubleshooting: Investigate, isolate, and resolve complex system integration issues, OS regressions, and hardware peripheral bugs across production devices.
- Cross-Functional Certification & Product Alignment: Partner with product management to refine technical specifications and collaborate directly with international certification teams and hardware test labs.
- Production Reliability: Participate in a regular on-call rotation to provide production support and maintain fleet-wide device health.
- AI-First Engineering: Apply an AI-first mindset, leveraging AI-powered development tools (such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and coding agents) to accelerate framework development, optimize infrastructure, and streamline root-cause analysis.
What You Need to Have
- Experience & Mindset: 2+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on Android platform architecture, framework design, and a genuine eagerness to learn and innovate in POS device engineering.
- Android Application & Framework Depth: Hands-on experience developing native Android applications and background services in Kotlin and Java, with proven experience communicating with external physical hardware.
- USB & Networking Protocols: Practical proficiency with Android USB Host APIs (USB OTG), managing USB device permissions/events, and socket programming for network IP printers and hardware endpoints.
- AOSP Language Proficiency: Proficiency in at least two major languages used in the Android stack (Kotlin, Java, C, or C++).
- UI & Performance Optimization: Experience developing clean, performant Android UIs adapted for custom terminal screen sizes and hardware constraints.
- Developer Tooling & Revision Control: Strong working knowledge of version control and code review tools, including Git and Gerrit.
- Security & Cryptography Basics: Broad understanding of platform security protocols, PKI, digital certificates, encryption/decryption, and hardware-level security (HSM).
- AI-First Fluency: Demonstrated experience leveraging AI coding tools and LLM assistants for code generation, refactoring, and debugging.
Experience that would be great to have:
- AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Customization: Hands-on experience modifying AOSP, building custom Android system services, or working within frameworks/base/.
- POS & Hardware Peripheral Vendor SDKs: Prior experience integrating third-party vendor SDKs for Point of Sale (POS), retail, or kiosk hardware.
- Embedded Systems & RTOS: Familiarity with low-level microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M/R), embedded C development, or Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) for inter-CPU communication protocols (SPI, UART, CAN).
