About the team
At Firebolt, the Metadata Service is central to the performance and reliability of our data warehouse. It makes Firebolt transactional and ensures atomicity, consistency and isolation of changes our customers make to their data or schemas. Each SQL query executed in Firebolt communicates with this service to guarantee consistent and correct results.
Firebolt is built to serve low-latency, data-intensive applications. To support these workloads, our Metadata layer is engineered for high performance. We aim for sub-millisecond latencies for common operations such as starting read-only transactions. The service can scale to thousands of queries per second for every customer.
The Metadata Team takes on the challenge of building and evolving this core service. We focus on scaling, maintaining high availability and reliability, developing new features, and – of course – making it even faster.
About the day to day
Firebolt’s engineering teams are deeply technical, with extensive domain expertise in high-performance data infrastructure. We seek managers who bring similar depth of knowledge to lead with clarity, foster a supportive team environment, and own successful feature delivery from design to deployment and measuring success.
- Build, lead and mentor a team of software engineers of all levels.
- Help define and shape culture and processes alongside our engineering teams and leaders.
- Get hands-on as needed. We expect managers to carry a broad and deep technical expertise of their component.
- Work with our field team and product team to understand our customer needs and convert these to our product roadmap.
- Shape the future of Firebolt’s Metadata service and how customers use our product.
- Own team operations, including project planning, task assignment, and resource prioritization.
- Own the hiring processes, ensuring a high bar for talent and a seamless onboarding experience.
- Manage performance, offering ongoing feedback and support for growth while celebrating achievements.
- 3+ years of experience as a leader of engineering teams.
- 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer, with strong expertise in C++/Golang.
- Experience building and operating highly concurrent, highly available, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
- Experience in recruiting and scaling engineering teams, collaborating with leadership and recruiting partners to attract and onboard top talent.
- Familiarity with conducting 1:1s, facilitating professional growth, and driving team engagement.
A bonus if you have
- Background in distributed, high-performance data processing.
- Familiarity with metadata services that provide distributed consistency to applications.
- Familiarity with databases such as FoundationDB, Aerospike or any high-performance KV-store.
