Position Overview

The Process & Controls Engineering Intern will assist in design, testing, and maintenance of manufacturing and clinical laboratory systems.  The position is intended to be a full-time summer opportunity for an engineering undergraduate to obtain hands-on experience with process engineering and automation while contributing to business-critical projects.

This is a 5 days/week onsite internship for Summer 2025 in Madison, WI requiring travel between any/all Wisconsin facilities.

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support Process and Controls Engineering personnel in supporting production and clinical laboratory systems including automated batch processing, material movement systems, environmental monitoring systems, supervisory control and data collection systems, and other automated systems.
  • Assist in basic troubleshooting and development of PLC and SCADA programming.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of field devices and various panel hardware associated with field device communication and control.
  • Manage and complete equipment troubleshooting, process development, system design, and continuous improvement projects, drive issues to resolution, and report out on progress.
  • Develop and test engineering, operational, and maintenance procedures consistent with medical device quality regulations.
  • Collect and analyze system performance data, generate summary reports, and present results to the project team.
  • Identify and evaluate equipment for capital projects and work with a project team to select the best option.
  • Develop engineering drawings, technical specifications, and scope of work documents to support projects.
  • Complete and maintain test documentation per Good Manufacturing Practices standards.
  • Dedication to teamwork with the ability to work as a member of project teams with oversight from members of the Process and Controls Engineering department.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across the business while providing value as a project team member.
  • Ability to manage time and balance priorities between multiple projects.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for approximately 20% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Travel Requirements
    • Ability and means to travel between Madison locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment towards Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Basic Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in pursuing a career as a process or controls engineer in a medical device manufacturing setting.
  • Prior experience with reading and interpreting engineering drawings (piping and instrumentation diagrams, control wiring diagrams, etc.).
  • Experience with industrial automation systems and components such as PLCs, sensors, drives, or HMI’s.
  • Experience or familiarity with PLC and/or SCADA programming and its role in industrial automation

Salary Range:

$34,000.00 - $54,000.00

 

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis.
