Job Description

Purpose of the role:

The Engineering Manager is accountable for execution, engineering operations, people leadership and organizational effectiveness within the Wealth Platform. They translate agreed product and technology priorities into effective delivery, act as the main Engineering point of contact for non-tech teams, and lead and develop the WP Engineering teams. 

The role manages 7 team leads for a total Engineering organization of ~25 people. 

Key Responsibilities 

Engineering delivery & goals alignment 

  • Partner with Product Management and the CTO to translate agreed product and technology priorities into executable engineering plans and team objectives, and support Team Leads in translating these into individual objectives for their team members. 
  • Be accountable for WP engineering performance and delivery, ensuring priorities are understood, appropriately resourced and executed.
  • Monitor progress, risks and dependencies, identify root causes when delivery is off track and drive corrective actions.

Engineering operations continuous improvement 

  • Lead engineering capacity and resource planning, identify capability gaps, and propose appropriate development, allocation or hiring actions in coordination with Product Management. 
  • Drive and coach the adoption of effective AI-assisted development tools and practices across the software development lifecycle when appropriate. 
  • Establish and monitor relevant engineering metrics and drive continuous improvement in delivery, quality, engineering practices and ways of working. 

People Leadership

  • Set clear objectives and expectations and ensure effective performance management across WP Engineering.
  • Manage, coach and develop Team Leads, supporting their growth as people managers, and directly manage individual contributors where appropriate
  • Foster engagement, accountability, collaboration and development across the WP Engineering organization.
  • Ensure transparent and aligned communication across the WP Engineering team through regular meeting. 

Cross-Functional Coordination 

  • Act as the main WP Engineering point of contact for Product Management, Client Success, other non-technical teams and engineering teams across other products. 
  • Coordinate cross-functional dependencies and facilitate prioritisation and arbitration where objectives or demands conflict.
  • Communicate engineering progress, risks and trade-offs, and coordinate engineering input on RFPs where required.

Qualifications

Technical Competencies required 

  • Strong software engineering foundation, with 5+ years of previous hands-on software development experience. 
  • Strong technical understanding and hands-on mindset, with the ability to understand engineering complexity, assess what is technically difficult or straightforward, deep-dive into issues when needed, and build credibility and trust with experienced engineers.
  • Experience delivering complex software products in an enterprise or B2B SaaS environment at a similar or larger scale.
  • Ability to engage credibly in technical discussions, understand design and architecture decisions, ask relevant questions and identify technical risks, without needing to be the primary technical expert or architect.

Leadership Competencies required 

  • People management: ability to manage and coach both individual contributors and Team Leads, providing regular and actionable feedback with a growth mindset. 
  • Leadership: ability to create clarity and engagement around common goals, generate commitment, drive structured execution and recognize individual and team contributions. 
  • Accountability: Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to turn objectives into outcomes, follow through on commitments and address issues when delivery is off track.
  • Decision-making: Ability to make clear choices between competing priorities and facilitate decisions across Product, Engineering and other stakeholders, including when interests conflict. 
  • Building trust: Ability to earn the trust of experienced engineers and Team Leads, combining technical credibility, consistency, transparency and sound judgment 
  • Change & continuous improvement: Ability to challenge existing ways of working, drive adoption of new practices and tools, and bring teams through change pragmatically. 
  • People and organization partnership: Work closely with HR to shape and continuously improve the Engineering organization, ensuring clear roles and expectations, consistent people management practices, and effective development and performance frameworks.
