The Privacy Engineering team is responsible for building systems to ensure personal data is processed or accessed according to customer expectations. As Etsy’s engineering systems become increasingly sophisticated, our role in supporting privacy alongside fast-moving business goals makes the work dynamic, challenging and rewarding.

The Privacy Engineering team is seeking a Privacy Software Engineer II to contribute to the team through design, implementation and collaboration with key partners as we work to make privacy the default in our complex engineering landscape. This position will require delivering multi-faceted projects, demonstrating strong communication skills to work with engineers of different types as well as cross-functional stakeholders from different backgrounds and technical levels. The right candidate for this job will have experience with intricate systems and codebases, coding with best practices, and communication with collaborators across the business.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager of Privacy Engineering. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

• Privacy Engineering is a multidisciplinary team that is situated alongside Security. The team is responsible for ensuring that Etsy product and engineering teams launch features that respect customer privacy and uphold our commitments to our customers.

• As both privacy practitioners and software engineers, we build privacy infrastructure that ensures Etsy is compliant with privacy regulations worldwide. We conduct Technical Privacy Reviews, build customer-facing privacy features, design privacy infrastructure and drive company-wide data governance initiatives.

• This team collaborates closely with privacy legal counsel, product engineering, platform engineering, and infrastructure teams across Etsy.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Contribute at all levels; from front-end (HTML, CSS, JS, and relevant frameworks), to API design and back-end (PHP, MySQL, BigQuery), and standalone supporting services running in containers

• Participate in code and design reviews and maintain high standards of code quality, and occasionally participate in technical privacy reviews

• Work with supporting functions, such as analytics, legal, data engineering, security and others to make sure we are building systems that deliver on our goals

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• You are motivated by the urgency and importance of privacy, both as a human right and as a core technological function. While not necessary, familiarity with the current state of technical privacy regulations (e.g. CPRA) and platform limitations (e.g. 3rd party cookies, App-Tracking Transparency) will help you increase your impact.

• You have 2+ years of experience working on large scale projects

• You take pride in how well you document technical design, and lead others around you to bring them along.

• You have a knack for organization and breaking down large problems into smaller ones.

• You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.

• You write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability and scalability.

• You are a mindful, transparent, and communicative member of your team.
