What’s the role?

We are looking for a strong technical and people leader for a team of Scientists and ML Engineers on the Retrieval Team in the Recommendations Org. The Engineering Manager will be leading the Retrieval Team in a larger Recommendations Initiative that will be responsible for developing high quality candidate sets that incorporate deep user and inventory understanding as well as relational understanding between listings and groups of listings in our Etsy catalog. 

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What does the day-to-day look like?

• Developing comprehensive buyer representations for building more personalized candidate sets. 

• Iterating on baseline substitute and complementary-based candidate sets. 

• Building real-time candidate set generation pipelines that can respond dynamically to user’s within-session actions. 

• Better understanding of offline evaluation metrics for high quality candidate sets.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• M.S. or PhD in Machine Learning or Computer Science. 

• 2-3 years of people management experience.

• Strong Machine Learning hands-on experience. 

• Previous experience in ranking or recommendation problems. 

• Strong product intuition and communication skills. 

• Experience working with large-scale production systems. 

• Experience working with applied scientists.
