Etsy’s Site Reliability Engineering team is seeking an Engineering Manager of Core Infrastructure, to join us in our mission of building and supporting reliable large scale infrastructure. The SRE team owns several aspects of business critical infrastructure and services that enable developers to efficiently build and deliver code as well as support the uptime of etsy.com, our API Infrastructure and much more!

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Foundation SRE. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

The Core Infrastructure SRE team is an SRE team in the Etsy Foundation SRE org that’s responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the core infrastructure that powers Etsy.com, our API infrastructure and much more!

• We use tools like Terraform, Chef, GCP, Ruby, Golang and many more to manage our infrastructure resources

• We’re responsible for building and maintaining the compute and networking infrastructure that powers etsy.com

• We ensure that our infrastructure is resilient to failures, traffic scaling events and automated patching events

• We build and maintain multiple deployments pipeline platforms that enable our developer community to make infrastructure changes safely and efficiently

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Lead a team of 5 to 8 SREs. At Etsy, engineering managers have a limited role in the hands-on process of building software, but a very large role in orchestrating and coaching engineers to achieve results together.

• Work across teams with peer engineering leadership, product development teams and others to help support their infrastructure needs

• Prioritize, scope, plan, develop, and deliver projects at various completion stages or definitions when started.  Planning and delivery of your team’s roadmap

• Foster a collaborative and high-performing engineering culture on your team through mentorship, development practices, and career growth opportunities

• Partake in technical conversations with your engineers and leverage your previous experience to provide technical direction and influence technical decisions

• Work with other leaders within engineering to develop and evolve engineering processes and standard methodologies

• Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the engineers on your team.

• Participate in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring, and onboarding exceptional engineering talent

• Foster a culture of learning, collaboration and thoughtful delivery on your teams

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are

• 2+ years of experience directly managing engineers - including providing leadership, mentorship, feedback, and investing in their career growth.  

• You have experience managing SRE teams that are responsible for the uptime of critical production infrastructure

• You have a passion for building highly scalable, fault tolerant systems and understand good systems design

• You can make engineering tradeoffs based on problem and context

• You can collaborate effectively with both junior and senior team members.

• Your enthusiasm and passion for learning and improving are contagious which shows through your experience empowering others to grow!
