Software Engineer II (DevOps & Observability) - Transportation Routing Services

Location: Redlands, CA

Department: 4210 - Software Product Development

Overview

Esri provides global transportation routing services that help users solve problems such as finding routes and driving directions, optimizing deliveries for a fleet of vehicles, identifying areas reachable within 30 minutes, performing site selection analyses, and more.

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for enhancing the observability and operational reliability of routing services. You will develop data engineering pipelines, build dashboards and alerts that provide actionable insights into service health and usage, and create automation that helps teams quickly detect and resolve issues. Your work will play a key role in maintaining the high availability of routing services and shaping their next generation. This role has no requirement to be on call.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve data pipelines that store and analyze service logs in a cloud-based data warehousing system
  • Employ automation, effective monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code 
  • Develop and sustain data pipelines for gaining operational insights on deployed services
  • Create visualizations that enable stakeholders, including product management and software development teams, to gain insights into routing service performance, reliability, failures, and usage patterns from processed logs
  • Enhance monitoring systems to collect additional metrics that describe the real-time health of routing services, improve alerts, and develop automated runbooks that take corrective actions
  • Work with software development teams, technical support, and other internal stakeholders to improve the metrics, traces, and logs generated by routing services to enhance observability and improve existing workflows

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in writing Python code for data processing
  • Knowledge of loading, managing, and analyzing data in AWS (Amazon Web Services) using Athena
  • Experience developing dashboard applications using Grafana
  • Hands-on experience for provisioning cloud infrastructure using Terraform
  • Proven success working collaboratively with diverse, cross-functional teams to drive outcomes
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related technology field

Recommended Qualifications

  • Experience with Python-based data processing libraries such as pandas, Polars, or DuckDB
  • Experience maintaining and enhancing existing monitoring and observability systems for web services using AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, mtail, and Grafana
  • Experience managing production alerts and incident response workflows using PagerDuty
  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related technology field

$101,192$167,336 USD
