About the Role 

We are looking for a Software Engineer Specialist to help build and evolve the cloud foundation services that power Esko's SaaS products. 

This is a hands-on technical role focused on turning architectural direction into robust, production-ready platform capabilities. You will partner closely with Architects, bringing deep implementation expertise to technical decisions while owning the detailed design, implementation, quality, and operational readiness of complex cloud services. 

You will work on shared platform capabilities such as repository and data services, workflow, search, APIs, and other foundational services used across multiple Esko products. You will remain deeply hands-on while mentoring engineers, solving complex technical problems, and raising engineering standards across the team. 

What You Will Do 

• Design, build, and evolve scalable cloud foundation services used across multiple Esko products. 

• Own the detailed technical design and implementation of complex capabilities, from requirements through production. 

• Remain deeply hands-on, writing high-quality code and solving complex distributed systems and engineering problems. 

• Partner with Architects to translate architectural direction into production software, providing implementation feedback and identifying technical trade-offs. 

• Improve the reliability, performance, observability, testability, and maintainability of platform services. 

• Lead code reviews, technical problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and resolution of complex production issues. 

• Drive engineering excellence through automated testing, code quality, design practices, and operational readiness. 

• Mentor engineers through hands-on collaboration, reviews, and technical guidance. 

Required Experience 

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend, cloud-native, or large-scale SaaS applications.  

• Strong hands-on software engineering experience with Java/JVM technologies and modern backend frameworks.  

• Strong experience designing and building REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.  

• Experience translating architecture and high-level designs into detailed technical designs and production-quality implementations.  

• Demonstrated ability to identify implementation trade-offs, challenge assumptions, and provide constructive technical feedback during design discussions.  

• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts including scalability, concurrency, consistency, availability, resiliency, and fault tolerance.  

• Experience developing and operating scalable applications on AWS or another major cloud platform.  

• Strong experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL and Amazon DynamoDB, including data modeling, access patterns, transactions, indexing, and performance optimization  

• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Git, and modern software delivery practices.  

• Experience diagnosing complex production problems using logs, metrics, distributed tracing, profiling, and performance analysis.  

• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical decisions through design reviews, code reviews, and sound engineering judgment. 

Preferred Experience 

• Experience with Scala or other functional programming languages and functional programming concepts. 

• Experience with Kafka, Redis, Akka, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, or similar distributed technologies. 

• Experience building shared cloud platforms or foundation services consumed by multiple products or engineering teams. 

• Experience modernizing legacy or large-scale distributed systems. 

• Experience establishing or improving engineering practices within a team or across related engineering teams.
