Job description
Embark Studios is hiring a Technical Director, Developer Experience — a full-time, based in Stockholm role. Apply directly on Embark Studios's careers page below.
Developer Experience at Embark is about how we build our games. With developers we mean everyone who makes our games: engineers, artists, designers, QA and audio. Today this work is spread over several teams. Tools & CI handles our Unreal builds and Perforce, Backend Delivery handles our backend monorepo and developer infrastructure, and a small group works on our AI platform. We see a big opportunity in bringing this work together under one long-term vision, and we want you to lead it.
As Technical Director, you'll set the 2–3 year vision and roadmap for the platform everyone at Embark builds on. You'll lead the leads of Tools & CI and Backend Delivery, and make sure our builds, tools and AI platform work as one. You'll start by leading Backend Delivery directly while we hire its new lead, then step into the full role.
Example of Responsibilities
Set direction and priorities for Developer Experience: CI and builds, source control, hosting and storage for internal tools, AI fundamentals, and iteration time
Write and own the studio-wide Developer Experience vision and roadmap, together with the CTO and the other technical directors
Grow strong technical leadership under you, and hire where we have gaps
Find out where our developers lose time, for example slow builds, long editor start-up and long compile times, measure it, and make it better
Build our AI platform (model access, agent runtime and hosting for AI tools) so that every team can use AI in their daily work
Work closely with game teams, Workflows, Engine and other teams that build on top of the platform you own
Desired Qualifications
Experience leading leaders, i.e. managing team leads or managers
A solid technical background in build systems, CI, source control, backend infrastructure or developer tooling.
Experience setting a long-term technical vision and getting people to follow it
You care about artists, designers and QA as much as about programmers
Experience with Unreal Engine, large Perforce depots, monorepos or Bazel is meriting
Experience rolling out AI tools for developers is a plus
At Embark we offer competitive salaries, passionate colleagues to share knowledge with and much more, but most of all we invite you to take part of a journey into the unknown, to build creative, surprising and beautiful experiences together.
Be yourself at Embark and make games while doing so. Please apply with confidence. We can’t wait to hear from you (in English)!
