About the Role

Members of the Elsevier's Global Strategic Networks (GSN) team build relationships with research leaders around the globe, broadening influence and building trust to improve research performance and to develop a positive business environment.

We do this by engaging closely with and understanding leaders at leading research institutions around the globe, giving voice to their needs and concerns within Elsevier, and helping the business develop and deliver impactful solutions and flexible policy frameworks to meet their needs. The team has members across the globe.

Working within a team environment, and often across different business units of Elsevier, the Academic Relations Manager will report to the Vice President of Global Strategic Networks (VP GSN) in Asia Pacific Region (APAC), but also engage extensively with other business units in the region and globally. The role is based in Tokyo, but covers the Asia Pacific Region (APAC), except China.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Chief of Staff for GSN APAC in leading and supporting strategic projects needing trust with internal and external parties.
  • Lead with VP GSN APAC and broader teams such as Sales, Policy, Marketing, Communications, in building country plans to guide the team’s engagements and collaborations.
  • With independence and trust with VP GSN APAC lead strategic projects externally and internally, develop key analytics for media engagements, drive engagements with external strategic stakeholders.
  • Provide in-depth business intelligence to prepare for presentations, writing speeches and, including preparing presentations for VP GSN APAC and Elsevier Executive Management Team.
  • Independently support and lead strategic projects Elsevier undertakes in the region, and as appropriate globally through pro-active engagement of teams.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and good management practices across GSN and other business units.

Requirements

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • A proven independence to drive projects in a matrix organized global organization
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadline-driven projects
  • A track record of having undertaken work in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Data Science knowledge of benefit.
  • Flexible working; taking into account the global nature of the group and project-based timelines.
  • BA or advanced degree required;
  • In-depth knowledge of Elsevier business and the broader research and innovation landscape is of advantage.
  • Business level English and Japanese (N2, preferably N1) required.
