SENIOR DEVOPS ENGINEER

THE COMPANY: 

Element Science, Inc. is a medical device and digital health company focused on developing solutions at the intersection of clinical-grade wearables, machine learning algorithms, and lifesaving therapies in order to address leading causes of death and hospitalization in patients with heart disease, primarily as they transition from the hospital-to-home. By putting the needs of patients and physicians first, our personalized digital devices, which are designed for function, comfort, and ease-of-use, aim to redefine the paradigm of care for these patients.  Our first product, a wearable patch defibrillator, is initially targeted at treating the more than 500,000 patients in the US with an elevated temporary risk of potentially experiencing a lethal heart rhythm.  Based in San Francisco, our funders include Third Rock Ventures, Google Ventures, Deerfield Healthcare, Qiming Venture Partners USA, Cormorant Asset Management, and Invus Opportunities.

SUMMARY OF ROLE:

Element Science is building a world class software engineering team responsible for a software ecosystem comprising of mobile, web and desktop applications, Cloud and Web services that receive, process, store and visualize information coming from our devices. We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to own our Cloud infrastructure, software release process and tools, and to contribute to software development tasks as needed. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of provisioning, maintaining, and monitoring Cloud infrastructure, and developing and releasing software applications and services in digital health, health IT or IOT spaces.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and automate infrastructure for provisioning, deployment, and delivery of secure and scalable Cloud services on AWS to development, test, and productions environments.
  • Set up tools and services to identify, alert and correct issues with Cloud environments and deployments. Automate corrective actions to the extent possible.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure for CI/CD, integrating to pipeline software best practices such as code reviews, unit tests, test automation framework(s), static and security code analysis, and branching. Automate release artifacts for formal releases.
  • Provide software configuration management documentation in compliance with Element Science software development process and quality system, including branching strategy, and versioning of internal components, algorithms, and SOUP.
  • Develop source and test code, as needed, for secure, available, scalable, and reliable Cloud services using Web API (for example) and related clients such as web and mobile applications.
  • Engage in continuous improvements discussions for software development.
  • Understand compliance standards required by medical device regulated environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of relevant IT or software engineering experience with 3+ experience in Cloud infrastructure, provisioning, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Strong knowledge of AWS and Linux are highly desirable for this role.
  • Comfortable creating and managing VPCs, load balancers, clusters, server instances, databases and data storage. Experience with infrastructure automation using Terraform, Ansible or similar tools.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes and Helm charts) in a Cloud environment (AWS, GCP and/or Azure).
  • Experience with building a suite of monitoring services, alerts, automated and/or manual corrective actions to maintain operational excellence.
  • Experience with building framework, automation, and tooling to enable software best practices such as CI/CD, code reviews, static code analysis, and automated testing, with a process improvement mindset.
  • Experience in CI/CD using Bitbucket, Jenkins, or similar tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred experience with Python, JavaScript, Java and/or C#.
  • Preferred experience with mobile application development for iOS and Android using native tools or cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter.
  • Preferred experience with test automation frameworks such as Qwerty, Cucumber or similar tools.
  • Preferred familiarity with medical device or other regulated environments.
  • Preferred experience with integration of streaming data technologies such as Spark and Hadoop.
  • Preferred experience with machine learning services such as AWS SageMaker.

The salary for this exempt-level position will be based on experience and qualifications within an established pay range.

  • Pay range: $165,000 - $185,000 + Annual Bonus
