Job Description

The Opportunity

As a Project Engineer, you will play an important role in developing future electricity network investment projects across the EHV distribution system.

Working within the Specification & Design function, you will support the front-end engineering, planning and development of projects, ensuring schemes are technically robust, fully defined and ready for successful delivery.

Projects will include substation asset replacement, network reinforcement, customer connections and new infrastructure developments across voltage levels from 11kV to 132kV.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the development of EHV infrastructure projects from concept through to delivery-ready status.
  • Undertake feasibility studies, engineering assessments and optioneering activities.
  • Develop technical specifications for substation plant replacement, reinforcement and customer connection projects.
  • Produce project scopes, engineering requirements, cost estimates and delivery strategies.
  • Assess technical risks, constraints and opportunities during project development.
  • Coordinate engineering surveys and stakeholder inputs required to support project definition.
  • Support business case development and investment planning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety requirements and network policies.
  • Provide technical input during project development and design reviews.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure solutions meet operational, customer and commercial requirements.
  • Support the handover of well-defined, delivery-ready projects into project delivery teams.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Degree, HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of utility engineering standards and industry best practice.
  • Understanding of CDM requirements and engineering governance processes.
  • Experience delivering projects within electricity transmission and distribution networks or analogous electrical infrastructure sectors.
  • Knowledge of substation plant and equipment operating at 11kV, 33kV and 66kV, with exposure to 132kV desirable.
  • Experience working on plant replacement, reinforcement and customer connection projects.
  • Understanding of:
    • Power transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Protection and control systems
    • Substation primary plant
    • Associated civil infrastructure
  • Experience working on greenfield and brownfield substation projects.
  • Knowledge of AIS and GIS substations.
  • Experience managing project costs, programme activities and stakeholder interfaces.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid role involving a blend of home working, office-based collaboration and regular site visits across the North East, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire regions.

Long-term opportunities are available through a variety of engagement models.
