As a Systems Engineer at Scripps, you'll design, implement, and maintain the server and infrastructure platforms across on-premises data centers and multiple public clouds. This role owns the day-to-day health, security, and reliability of Windows and Linux server environments, virtualization, disaster recovery, and serves as an escalation point for infrastructure issues raised by the broader business.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Responsible for the enterprise-wide maintenance and administration of Windows and Linux servers, Active Directory, VMware, infrastructure tools, and disaster recovery
Responsible for maintaining current and future VMware vSphere hosting environments. Maintains, deploys, and decommissions virtual machines as necessary
Administers cloud servers and infrastructure, including provisioning, hybrid connectivity, and capacity management
Maintains Linux server infrastructure, including system health, patching, DNS, and configuration management
Automates recurring infrastructure work using PowerShell, Bash, and infrastructure-as-code tooling to reduce manual effort
Provides level 1 and 2 technical support to internal and external customers; serves as escalation point for server and infrastructure issues
Identifies system resources that are nearing capacity, and recommends solutions to resolve potential system resource over-allocation proactively
Maintains and tests backup and disaster recovery systems; participates in DR exercises
Participates in on-call rotation to include after-hours and weekend activities in a production environment
Participates in, or independently performs scheduled after-hours/weekend system deployment and maintenance activities
Creates and updates process documentation, runbooks, and standards
Coordinates with network engineers, security teams, application teams, and managed services providers to resolve defects and deliver cross-functional projects
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Two-year degree in computer science or equivalent experience and certification
3+ years of experience in a production-oriented, highly available, hosting operations environment required
Must be able to lift to 50 pounds
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Prior system troubleshooting experience
Prior experience with Linux Administration, Bash scripting, and automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, etc) relative to infrastructure technologies
Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential
Demonstrated experience successfully working in cross-functional project teams
Demonstrated experience administering public cloud infrastructure such as Microsoft Azure or AWS
Ability to work and prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Customer service skills are an asset
Highly self-motivated and directed with a keen attention to detail
