Transmission Planning and Interconnection Study Engineer

Department: Grid & Operations

Location: Calgary

Employment Type: FullTime

At E Source, we help utilities make sense of complexity in a rapidly changing landscape, and we’re looking for a Transmission Planning and Interconnection Study Engineer to help shape how that impact shows up in the world.

E Source is a research, data/analytics, and technology focused professional services firm focused exclusively on the Utility industry in North America. We help utilities target and serve their customers more effectively, enhance and optimize their grid, and leverage operating best practices and technologies to manage their business more effectively. Headquartered in Texas, we have 450+ employees across the US and Canada. Learn more at www.esource.com

As a Transmission Planning and Interconnection Study Engineer, you’ll join our grid solutions team as we strengthen reliability, support renewable integration, and advance grid modernization for our clients. You’ll support all aspects of transmission studies, including power flow, voltage stability, transient stability, and other power system analyses. This role is ideal for someone early in their power systems career who has some hands-on experience with tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, or TARA, is eager to learn the interconnection study process, and wants to contribute to work that shapes real-world decisions in the energy industry.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform power system analysis and network modeling to meet client specifications for reliability, regulation, and quality

  • Conduct studies in areas such as generator connections, voltage stability, arc-flash energy, insulation coordination, and power station design

  • Prepare detailed technical reports and contribute to technical work products

  • Collaborate with a global team to execute studies and deliver high-quality solutions

  • Manage client relationships and expectations, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery

  • Contribute to business development activities and identify new client opportunities

You’re likely a great fit if you:

  • Are eager to learn the independent system operator (ISO) cluster interconnection process and transmission stability analysis

  • Are excited to learn about substation layout, protection, and control

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills

And even better if you:

  • Hold a master’s degree or Ph.D. in power systems engineering

  • Have PSS/E model development experience and IPLAN and/or Python programming skills

  • Have PSCAD model development experience

Experience and Skills to Qualify Include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

  • Some experience with stability studies using PSS/E, congestion analysis and cost modeling studies, or cluster feasibility studies across one or more independent system operators (ISOs), such as MISO, CAISO, PJM, or SPP

  • Working knowledge of electric power systems, synchronous generators, motors, power electronic inverters, wind turbines, and solar

  • Experience with transmission studies on power flow, voltage stability, and other power system analyses

  • Proficiency with the PSS/E software package, including modules for load-flow, short-circuit, and transient stability analysis; experience with alternative planning software such as TARA, PSLF, DIgSILENT, or DSA Tools is highly desirable

  • Familiarity with PSCAD and electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling and simulation

  • Background in static and dynamic modeling of power system components in PSS/E or DSA Tools, including high-voltage direct current (HVDC), voltage source converters (VSC), static var compensators (SVC), static synchronous compensators (STATCOM), and thyristor-controlled series capacitors (TCSC)

  • Working knowledge of reliability standards and transmission system interconnection

At E Source, you’ll work alongside people who are thoughtful, curious, and deeply knowledgeable about utility and energy systems. We value clarity over jargon, substance over flash, and collaboration over ego. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your skills, contribute to meaningful work, and help shape a company that plays a real role in how the energy future unfolds.

What you can expect:

  • Excellent insurance options, including medical, dental, and vision plans; company-paid life insurance; company-paid long- and short-term disability insurance; medical and dependent-care flexible spending plans, and paid parental leave.

  • A flexible time off (FTO) policy that provides paid time away from work, approved by your manager, while ensuring business needs, workload commitments, and appropriate coverage are maintained.

  • A RRSP plan with a 3% employer match.

The budgeted salary for this position is $80,000 – $85,000 CAD + annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.

This role is based in Canada. It will be hybrid, working from our Calgary, Alberta office four days per week with one day per week working from home, and minimal travel as needed for clients in the US and Canada.

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the US or Canada. We’re unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas or Labour Market Impact Assessments (Cdn) at this time.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
