This position can be located at any Duke Energy Florida North Central operation complex that has vacancy. The exact location will be determined at the time of offer based on business needs and available office space.

Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Job Summary

The Senior Engineer/Engineer III manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer/Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer/Engineer III position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer/Engineer III identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.
 

This Senior Engineer/Engineer III position for the North Central Florida Zone will support System & Retail Capacity Planning, Substation Optimization, Storm Protection Plan, and other reliability programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.

  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment.  Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Required/Basic Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. 

Engineer III

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND four (4) years minimum engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Senior Engineer

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience or five (5) years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer

  • Proficiency in electric distribution system design engineering practices and principles (i.e., ability to perform desktop & field validations, recognition of field equipment including electronic & hydraulic reclosers, sectionalizers, switchgear, wye & delta transformer banks, cutouts, phasing, etc.)

  • Knowledge of distribution system planning practices including circuit model validation, analyzing switching contingencies, troubleshooting circuit overloads and voltage violations, resolving high-neutral current issues, etc.

  • Experience utilizing feeder analysis software such as CYMDIST to perform planning studies

  • Skilled in engineering theories and principles

  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Skilled principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

 

Working Conditions

  • Valid driver's license

  • M - F, flex schedule available

  • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility
