Job Description

Electrical Design Engineer

We are looking for a highly motivated and technically sound individual to join our Electrical Design Engineering team. This is in a department known as Environmental Controls & Life Support Systems.

Electrical Design Engineering designs electronics that are required to drive electromechanical components to life support systems for Navy and Space applications. Some of these products include: process controllers, sensor signal conditioning, DC/DC Converters, FPGA based digital controllers, brushless DC motor controllers, actuator control/drives, hardware based closed loop system process control, high power (200KW) power conversion and more.

These electrical products are typically controllers driving rotating machinery (pumps/fans/actuators) and have built in sensor/data acquisition systems with serial interface controls. They are designed for long life, high reliability and the ability to operate in severe space radiation environments as well as high vibratory and shock load environments.

The ideal candidate must be capable of designing, troubleshooting, and field servicing high power equipment for submarine applications in a low cost environment.

Power Electronic Requirements
• Extensive experience with power electronics (100kW) including use of IGBT, SCR, Relays, Rectifiers and FETs as a minimal. Experience with AC induction motors is a plus.
• Familiarity with 440AC, 3 phase power per MIL-STD-1399
• Experience in selection and integration of COTS equipment into our product along with custom design

General Design Experience
• Experience in mixed signal Analog/Digital board design
• Experience with microprocessor architecture and design is a plus.
• The candidate should possess a diverse set of skills that includes the development of electrical system architecture, trade studies, requirements derivation, requirements allocation and analysis to support the allocations to electrical products designed both in-house as well as analysis for allocations to supplier items. Those supplier items can be, but not limited to: actuators, fans pumps, sensors, brushless DC motors, heaters and stepper motors.
• The candidate should have a good practical understanding of EMC requirements equivalent to MIL-STD-461 and have the ability to assess project specific power quality requirements to understand and manage risks during the proposal, architecture development, design and qualification phases.
• The candidate will be required to interface with customers during proposal, architecture development, systems requirements reviews, design reviews, test readiness reviews and technical interchange meetings. This requires the ability to communicate across technical and management disciplines professionally, effectively and independently through presentations, reports, and electronic media to support programs in both a customer lead role with suppliers and in a supplier role to major customers.

Experience / Qualifications
6+ years direct detailed active involvement in the attributes described above is required.

Highly Desired Capabilities
• Support the Electrical Designers by providing guidance and recommendations for electrical/electronic component parts selection for high reliability space applications
• Generate Procurement drawings and specifications for Electrical Components for space applications.
• Translate Flight-quality electrical parts lists into commercial parts lists to support procurement of commercial parts for the Engineering Development process; this task includes locating distributors’ inventory to expedite the procurement process.
• Work with Purchasing to resolve technical issues with various Component Manufacturers.

5+ to 7 years experience
