Project Engineer

Location: Underdale, SA, Australia

Downer are now seeking an experienced and motivated Project Engineer to join our SA Asphalt Surfacing team. Based out of Underdale, this role is vital in supporting the successful delivery of asphalt surfacing contracts while fostering a strong Zero Harm culture, maximising financial outcomes, and ensuring compliance with Downer standards and delivery methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the delivery of asphalt surfacing projects by contributing to project plans, budgets, schedules and daily quality documentation. 

• Ensure all works comply with project specifications, Downer procedures, quality systems and relevant legislation. 

• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, internal teams and operational crews. 

• Monitor project performance, support progress claims, track commercial triggers and assist with financial reporting. 

• Oversee contractor and supplier performance on site, ensuring service delivery aligns with agreements and standards. 

• Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities, enhancing delivery processes and supporting transparent team communication.

• Promote and uphold a strong Zero Harm culture through regular safety engagement, risk identification and timely corrective actions. 

What You’ll Bring

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering (or similar) .

• Experience in construction, civil infrastructure or asphalt/spray seal environments.

• Experience in a similar project or business management role.

• Strong stakeholder and relationship‑building skills.

• Knowledge of civil construction quality systems and safety requirements.

• Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.

• Strong communication and literacy skills.

• Competence in planning, time management and achieving outcomes.

• A collaborative team player who meets commitments, owns outcomes, and strives for continuous improvement.
