Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer
Location: Kochi, Kerala, India
Department: Engineering
Workplace: hybrid
Employment Type: full
Description
Dodge Construction Network (Dodge) is looking for a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to help modernize a legacy production system. The platform is built on Grails, Angular, and Oracle, with significant business logic in PL/SQL stored procedures. Over the coming years we’ll move it to AWS, migrate off Oracle, and replace legacy components incrementally, without disrupting the users who depend on it every day.
This isn’t a rewrite-from-scratch role. You’ll work in the existing system while it remains in production: read and understand logic that could be scarcely documented, prove that new code behaves like the code it replaces, and make careful, reversible changes. You’ll also work on the platform’s data pipeline, including ingestion, matching, deduplication, enrichment, and search, and help integrate new capabilities such as machine learning models. If you find untangling a mature system more satisfying than starting fresh, and you care about leaving clear decisions behind for the next engineer, this role is for you.
This is a full-time position and reports directly to the VP, Data Platform.
Preferred Location
Qualified candidates should be based in or near Kochi and able to work from our Kochi office as part of a hybrid schedule.
Travel Requirements
Expected travel is minimal for this role.
Essential Functions
- Own features end to end across the Angular front end and server-side stack, as primary author on either side
- Read, document, and reason about existing PL/SQL logic, and migrate it into well-tested application code
- Plan and carry out incremental modernization so old and new paths can be compared safely in production
- Write characterization tests that capture current system behavior before changes and build the test coverage the codebase lacks today
- Build and maintain containerized services on AWS, using managed databases and proper secrets management, and diagnose your own production issues through logs and metrics
- Develop and improve data-pipeline stages, including ingestion, matching, deduplication, enrichment, and geocoding, and the Elasticsearch/OpenSearch indexes that serve them
- Design event-driven integrations using queue-based messaging (SQS/SNS) with appropriate delivery guarantees
- Integrate ML model endpoints into existing pipelines in a way that is observable and safe to roll back
- Keep the current Grails application stable and secure while it remains the production system, including upgrades and fixes
- Write pull requests, design notes, and decision records that someone joining the team a year from now can follow
- Work closely with product, data, and operations stakeholders to sequence the migration around business priorities and risk
Education Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent education and work experience.
Required Experience, Knowledge and Skills
- 8+ years building and maintaining production web applications, with substantial experience on a system you inherited rather than greenfield work
- Genuine full-stack depth: a modern front-end framework and a server-side stack at a level where you can be the primary author on either side of a feature
- Strong SQL, and the ability to read and reason about stored-procedure logic. You will be reading thousands of lines of PL/SQL. Oracle experience is a significant advantage; willingness and ability to work in it is required.
- Experience modernizing legacy code incrementally — strangler-fig, branch-by-abstraction, parallel-run, characterization tests. You can describe a migration you worked on concretely: what moved first, how equivalence was proven, what went wrong.
- Production AWS experience — containerized services, managed databases, secrets management, and reading logs and metrics to diagnose your own problems
- A real testing habit. Replacing logic you can't fully see demands it, and this codebase will not protect you.
- Clear written communication — pull requests, design notes and decisions that make sense to someone reading them a year later
Preferred Experience, Knowledge and Skills
- Angular, especially a large application upgraded across several major versions
- Grails or Groovy, or another JVM framework of that generation — enough to work safely in it while it is still the production system
- Experience re-platforming off Oracle (e.g. to PostgreSQL/Aurora), including moving
- stored-procedure logic into application code
- Data-pipeline/ETL work; ingestion, matching, deduplication, enrichment, geocoding.
- Elasticsearch or OpenSearch in production
- Python, and event-driven integration patterns — queue-based egress (SQS/SNS or equivalent) and the delivery guarantees that come with it
- Experience integrating an ML model endpoint into an existing pipeline
