SCADA Engineering Manager

About the role:
The SCADA Engineering Manager oversees the development and delivery of Ignition-based SCADA solutions, with primary focus on Perspective applications for mission-critical data center projects. This role leads multiple Lead SCADA Engineers and their development teams (managing 2-6 Lead Engineers with typically 20-40 total developers), establishing Ignition development standards, Perspective design guidelines, and delivery processes while ensuring high-quality execution across parallel projects. The SCADA Engineering Manager coordinates with Field Engineering leadership, drives Ignition platform strategy, and represents the development team in strategic planning and client engagements. This role would require 15-20% travel.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage 2-6 Lead SCADA Engineers and oversee their project teams (typically 20-40 total developers)
- Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and create professional development plans for Lead Engineers
- Support Lead Engineers in mentoring their team members and fostering Ignition expertise growth
- Recruit, hire, and onboard new Ignition engineering talent to support organizational growth
- Foster a collaborative, quality-focused culture that prioritizes Ignition best practices and innovation
- Establish clear expectations, goals, and accountability measures for Ignition development team performance
- Balance workload distribution across teams and manage resource allocation for optimal efficiency
- Drive Ignition certification programs and ensure team maintains current platform knowledge
Ignition Standards & Process Management
- Define and maintain Ignition development standards including naming conventions, project structure, and scripting guidelines
- Establish Perspective design guidelines, UI/UX standards, component libraries, and responsive design requirements
- Develop and implement code review procedures, testing protocols, and quality assurance processes for Ignition projects
- Drive Ignition architecture decisions including gateway redundancy strategies, tag database design, and security configurations
- Maintain working knowledge of Ignition platform to guide strategic decisions and evaluate new features
- Ensure consistency in Perspective applications across multiple development teams and projects
- Partner with Field Engineering Manager to establish seamless handoff processes for Ignition commissioning
- Manage Ignition licensing strategy, module selection, and platform version migration planning
Project & Portfolio Management
- Oversee portfolio of Ignition development projects across multiple concurrent data center initiatives
- Support project estimation, scheduling, and timeline development for Perspective application development
- Monitor project progress, resource utilization, and milestone completion across all Ignition teams
- Identify and mitigate risks related to development delays, resource constraints, or technical challenges
- Coordinate inter-team dependencies and ensure alignment between Ignition development and field operations
- Track key performance metrics including project completion rates, code quality scores, and on-time delivery
- Manage Ignition gateway infrastructure including development, test, and production environments
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Client Engagement
- Partner with Field Engineering Manager to ensure Ignition applications support field deployment and commissioning needs
- Coordinate with PLC Engineering leadership to align control system integration with Ignition tag structures
- Collaborate with project management teams on scheduling, resourcing, and client commitments
- Represent Ignition development capabilities in client presentations, design reviews, and technical planning meetings
- Build and maintain relationships with key clients, demonstrating Ignition Perspective advantages
- Travel to client sites (15-20%) to support critical meetings, conduct Ignition demonstrations, and strengthen relationships
- Work with sales and business development teams to support proposals and Ignition technical scoping
- Maintain relationship with Inductive Automation for platform support and early access to new features
Organizational Excellence & Innovation
- Develop and implement Ignition training programs, onboarding processes, and knowledge sharing initiatives
- Build and maintain reusable Perspective component libraries, template collections, and code repositories
- Track and report key performance metrics to senior leadership
- Manage development team budget, Ignition licensing costs, and technology investments
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on project retrospectives and Ignition platform updates
- Ensure compliance with company policies, client requirements, and Ignition security best practices
- Implement development tools (Git, testing frameworks) to improve team efficiency and collaboration
- Position organization as technical leader in data center Ignition SCADA solutions
- Stay current with Ignition roadmap, Inductive Automation announcements, and industry trends
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in Ignition SCADA development with strong focus on Perspective applications
- 3+ years of direct people management experience leading technical teams, preferably managing managers or leads
- Working knowledge of Ignition platform architecture sufficient to guide development decisions and evaluate technical approaches
- Strong understanding of Ignition development lifecycle, from gateway configuration through production deployment
- Experience managing development portfolios with multiple concurrent Ignition projects
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with ability to influence across the organization
- Demonstrated ability to establish Ignition technical standards, processes, and quality frameworks
- Experience working with field operations teams to support Ignition deployment and commissioning activities
- Understanding of mission-critical operations and 24/7 uptime requirements
- Willingness and ability to travel 15-20% for client meetings and team support
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
- Ignition Gold Certification (Core or Perspective track)
- Experience managing Ignition teams in data center, hyperscale, or mission-critical facility environments
- Background in both Ignition development and field deployment roles
- Familiarity with Perspective design principles, responsive design, and mobile-first development
- PMP or other relevant management certifications
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies for engineering teams
- Knowledge of DCIM, EPMS, and BMS systems for data center applications
- Understanding of Ignition security framework including user roles, SSL/TLS configuration, and gateway hardening
- Experience with Ignition Edge solutions and distributed architecture deployments
