Job Description:

Lead Software Engineer, Media Engineering

On any given day at Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology, we’re reimagining ways to create magical viewing experiences for the world’s most beloved stories while also transforming Disney’s media business for the future. Whether that’s evolving our streaming and digital products in new and immersive ways, powering worldwide advertising and distribution to improve flexibility and efficiency, or delivering Disney’s unmatched entertainment and sports content, every day is a moment to make a difference to partners and to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

A few reasons why we think you’d love working here:

  • Building the future of Disney’s media: DE&E Technologists are designing and building the infrastructure that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.

  • Reach & Scale: The products and platforms this group builds and operates delight millions of consumers every minute of every day – from Disney+ and Hulu, to ABC News and Entertainment, to ESPN and ESPN+, and much more.

  • Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms and enhance how audiences experience

Media Engineering is an innovative, collaborative organization that builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. Media Engineering handles audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.

The Media Processing and Distribution (MPD) Core Media team develops the video encoding, packaging, and orchestration systems that power Disney’s video streaming platforms (Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu). We are looking for hardworking team players to join Media Engineering, who will thrive on Disney’s story telling legacy, who will embrace unconventional thinking, and who are passionate about contributing to The Walt Disney Company’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) experience.

As a Lead Software Engineer on the MPD Core Media Engineering team, you’ll be Responsible for:

  • The design, documentation, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of complex software systems.

  • Contributing to architectural solutions for orchestrating live media processing workflows, working across multiple domains with other senior engineering managers.

  • Collaborating with engineering and project managers to define and report on individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.

  • Applying Agile methodology and practices, including participation in regular scrums, sprint planning, and backlog grooming.

  • Contributing to a culture of collaboration, innovation, and open communication across several teams and stakeholders.

  • Providing on-call rotational support to 24/7 operations teams as needed.

  • Debugging complex issues involving workflows across multiple systems in a live production environment.

  • Contributing to the team's core fundamental software project needs by applying best practices and standard software guidelines.

  • Following established protocols for installation and maintenance and completing subsequent documentation.

  • Collaborating with other engineers to deliver new features and bug requirements.

  • Participating in the code reviews

  • Providing mentoring and coaching of best practices for more junior team members

  • Multitasking and self time management across multiple simultaneous projects.

Basic Skills:

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related software engineering field.

  • 7+ years of software architecture and development experience.

  • Full stack programming experience in one or more of Java/J2EE, Javascript, Angular, and/or VueJs

  • Experience with audio or video encoding and streaming technologies, including video encoding/compression, HLS packaging, and associated metadata workflows preferred.

  • Experience developing and deploying applications in AWS (S3, EC2, Lambdas, SNS/SQS Messaging, API Gateway) or similar cloud environment.

  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Deployment tools such as Github, Jenkins 2, Ansible, Kubernetes, Rancher and Docker

  • Experience working with and administration of relational databases like SQL

  • Working knowledge of collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with design and development of enterprise-centric user interfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
