Our Technology Capabilities and Innovation organization is seeking several Senior Chapter Engineering Managers to join us as we incubate these new opportunities in partnership with our business groups and partners. Our efforts will extend our organization’s continued contributions to standards bodies, open-source communities and research partnerships with leading-edge Universities.

A Senior Chapter Engineering manager is a technical people leader who is responsible for managing a small group of engineers, architects, and agile program managers. Additional responsibilities include driving strategic technology initiatives, aligning the organization to deliver services that meet the needs of the enterprise

As a leader in technology, this role develops and coaches teams to be able to identify, manage, and escalate risk, and effectively manage risk within the teams you oversee. 

The manager is responsible for the technical development of engineering staff within a technical domain. A hands-on Servant Leader and technical Subject Matter Expert, accountable for effectively skilling, tooling and allocating engineering Chapter members to best support the needs of Product and Value Stream Engineering teams, along with a disciplined approach to professional development of Chapter members. Coaches the team to continuously improve their process and practices, enforce appropriate quality and user experiences, drive out waste and toil, and to foster a culture of continuous innovation and learning. Effectively collaborates and negotiates with Product teams internal and external to IS. Span of control is approx. 18-22 Chapter members.

This person develops and coaches teams to be able to identify, manage, and escalate risk, and effectively manages risk within the teams you oversee.

How You’ll Do It

  • Establishes & owns the overall strategy for the product area represented. Works with architects to identify & evaluate capabilities required to support business, ensuring alignment to overall strategy. Works with product owners, socializing strategies, aiding in generation of roadmaps. Produces reference and solution architectures for the development community. Works with innovation team to bring capabilities to market. 
  • Focuses on process optimization through automation and tooling, allowing for the team to make advancements in productivity and reliability
  • Provides leadership and mentors engineers, creates opportunities to highlight the team by leading internal training events and encouraging external speaking engagements, blogs, etc
  • Communicates implications of design decisions, technology costs, benefits and implementation requirements to executive leadership
  • Collaboration is the key to success for DevOps, creating good partnerships between development and operation teams is critical to overall success. Additionally, fostering an innersourcing model is a valuable aspect to the developer experience
  • Defines how technical work should be done, selecting appropriate tools, defining technology, quality, experience and implementation standards and practices within own technical domain.  Develops own technical skills to attain Subject Matter Expertise in at least one technical implementation within own technical domain. Ensures consistency of technical execution and knowledge, sharing common practices and challenges within the Chapter. Engineer solutions for special projects as needed. 
  • Develops own Chapter into a highly technically competent, consistent, thoughtful and customer-centric team of technology experts. Works with Product Owners and Value Stream Engineering leaders to efficiently and effectively allocate chapter resources to meet Product needs. Fosters a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the Chapter.  Establishes and tracks to appropriate OKRs to ensure outcomes are met.
  • Instills a sense of purpose, curiosity and continuous learning with each and every Chapter member, motivating all to achieve their best. Owns the career and performance management process for the chapter, ensuring the collective’s technical competency continues to consistently evolve to effectively support Product Owner and Value Stream needs. Attracts, onboards and develops/retrains talent to achieve the strongest Chapter possible.
  • Utilizes PO and VS feedback and performance/satisfaction metrics to identify areas of continuous improvement within team. Engages with internal and external communities of practice to share experiences, contribute knowledge, learn and advocate for the Discover Technology brand. Promotes team innovation and collaboration of ideas across teams.

Qualifications You”ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related 
  • 4+ years of experience in Engineering People Management

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience designing and managing complex Jenkins pipelines. A familiarity with Jenkins shared libraries and plugin management for CI/CD workflows
  • Knowledge of integrating GitHub with CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency with artifact repositories – specifically for managing build artifacts, dependencies and version control across multiple environments
  • We’re looking for people who are motivated to learn from new challenges and who can take ambiguous topics and translate them into actionable plans working with multiple business and technical stakeholders. 
  • We need someone who is self-motivated and passionate about working end-to-end with innovation project squads. Someone who is a strong team player with outstanding communication, organization, and collaboration skills. 
  • You are a goal driven individual that enjoys interacting with people, and can iterate, improve continuously and take ownership. 
  • You are an intellectually curious person with a deep and persistent desire to learn. You are willing to ask questions, and you like the challenge of finding answers to the hard ones.  
  • You enjoy the camaraderie of collaboration towards solution for new ideas.  
  • You possess the ability to learn new technology quickly, demonstrated by experience in an engineering environment. 
  • You have very strong written and verbal communication skills accompanied by experience with tools such as GitHub, Confluence, and JIRA.

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $125,500.00 to $211,500.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
